Dead thunderchicken!

Post by Limbshot » April 27th, 2010, 9:41 pm

Well after 2 uneventful turkey hunts I finally headed down to the home farm to chase some thunder chickens. Sunday was far from ideal, rainy with winds in the mid to upper 20 mphs. Tree limbs falling all over the place. Well long story short, I finally got a responsive bird to answer just after 10:00 and shot him at 10:30. I think I punched the shot, and the bird jumped up and flew off the ridge until it finally crashed into the neighbor's field, falling some 200 feet straight down and crashing into the field. He then jumped and flew his way across the field towards the river. I marked where he went and got down off the ridge and went after him. I got to the area, and he had crawled up in a root system, but he saw me before I saw him. He jumped up out of the root system, and flew out into the river. Oh, and the river came up about 2 feet since Friday so it was moving. That damned bird swam all the way across the river and crawled up on the bank and sat there. I tried to walk the river in 3 different places, no way to get across. He just stayed there. I went back to the house and drove to the neighbor's place and his gate was locked. When pops got home we took the canoe down to our landing and paddled across the river and I walked over to where he was. The bird was still alive and jumped and flew up on the flat in front of me, and I shot him again and closed the deal. Upon inspection the bird had a broken wing and a broken leg, both I assume were from his very high fall. Anyway, here he is. 21 pounds, 1 inch spurs and a 10 inch beard. Never worked so damn hard for a bird in my life!!!

That is one of the damnedest turkey hunting stories I've ever heard.

I'm glad you stuck with it and got the bird LS. thumb2:

You kinda look like you just fell off a bluff yourself, LS. But good job on the bird.

Nice bird, and good story LS. You needed that one on video.

But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.
