Got a velvet buck today

Post by GoGop » June 11th, 2004, 6:54 pm

I was headed south on 270 about 9:15 this morning, and up ahead I see a tractor-trailer in the right lane smoke his tires in a panic stop, and everyone nearby stopping too. Then a buck jumps out in front of the truck, and runs over to the concrete divider. I figure he'll turn and go back, but he decides to jump the barrier and land right in front of a fast-moving red car. At this point he looked similar to the high-dive experts, doing several cartwheels about 30' in the air. Another car actually passed under the deer while he was in the air. The buck landed and slid/bounced off the road, and traffic resumed.
I got off the highway and looped around to come up behind the red car. The guy who drove under the deer had stopped too. The red car lady was kinda freaking out, saying she couldn't avoid it and didn't know what else to do. I told her handled exactly right by driving through the deer, rather than swerve and possibly hurt herself and other people. She calmed down a bit then.
After the police came and took my info I asked if I could take the deer, and he smiled real big and said "Sure, go ahead". I used my scooter lift to put him in my truck, then drove down to Richwoods, where I cut off his head and left his body within sight of my new stand. I'll be coyote hunting there in a couple days. I've got the head out in the yard, to let the bugs start eating their part so I'll have a European Mount, but I've got to figure a way to keep critters from taking it. I can't think of anything to put it in/under that can't be gotten into by asst raccoon/dog/fox visitors.

I think the velvet will get eaten, but I'm not sure what it'll look like when finished. Time will tell.

Burying it might be the way to go. Image Image
