*$%@!!!

Post by Limbshot » May 11th, 2011, 9:24 pm

Went to the doctor this morning because my right hip (the first replacement) has been giving me some trouble. Well according to the x-ray, the bone did not grow into the socket liner piece like it was supposed to. Also that piece was recalled. Therefore, I get to go back on August 25th, get cut back open and have that piece removed and a new one put in. :banghead:

That sucks Russ - hopefully you will be well on your way to recovery before the bowhuntin gets good in late October if they are doing it in late August.

Not trying to be nosey or sound lawyerish but just curious...when a piece like that is "recalled" does the manufacturer pay for the replacement or is that on you and your insurance??

That's what I was wondering, how much do you get billed for a recall on a surgical procedure?

Best of luck Russ.

Thanks guys. I'm not the happiest I've been, that is for sure. Kind of sucks really. According to my ortho doc, there is no way that any of this should cost me anything. The part manufacturer should have had a large sum of money set aside for these types of cases. He recommended good legal counsel to us and we will be looking into that very shortly. It is a good thing that they ill cover it and all, but still doesn't help out with the time I am out. :stick:

Russ, you will probably rehab faster this time because you know whet to expect. My BIL had three knee replacements due to defective joints. In one of them all the patients with that implant are suing in a class action. Let us know when you go in and we'll put up a prayer thread for success.

Thanks buddy. I will do that. Rehab should definitely be faster if for no other reason than they are doing half the work. The spike and ball side is just fine and was not recalled, just the socket cup. They are going to check everything else while they are in there just to be safe, but he said that all looks really good so he is not expecting any issues. He seems to think the rehab will be much easier and much faster, so I should be good.

No, although that didn't help. I had a condition called Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease when I was younger that causes the heads of the femurs to grow more flattened as opposed to rounded (not good for a ball in socket joint). They took me off high impact activities for years and the condition somewhat improved itself. A common long term effect of that condition is avascular necrosis (same condition Bo Jackson had that ended his sports career), which I was lucky enough to develop. Basically, I had a deficient blood supply feeding the heads of my femurs so they were literally breaking down and apart, and the condition cannot heal itself. Replacement is the only option. The last time I saw my x-rays pre-op, my right hip had a fracture that ran diagonally across the head and the head itself had rough edges, that even I could see withotu a trained eye. As you can imagine, the discomfort from this was pretty severe. Anyway, the right hip gave me the most trouble by far. After my procedure, one of his nurses asked me if I was sure I never had trouble with the left hip. I assured he that I rarely had any issues with it, definitely not as bad as the right one. She was shocked because she said looking at the X-rays, my left one was significantly worse. I never saw that X-ray, but the thought of that blows my mind, because that right one looked like hell.

Dayum, that sounds like some serious stuff. We are all hoping that this fixes it for good. By the way you need to get busy on the soccer forum.
