Where are the does?

Post by SAMCRO » February 22nd, 2012, 8:59 am

One of my boys spotted this one a couple mornings ago before I went to work. He's a regular. I cannot figure out where my does are. I rarely see them, but see buck after buck. I did see a doe yesterday at dusk. Walked out on my lower deck and there was a doe in the yard. She was about 15 feet from me, and walked down the trail I created to head in the woods.

Other than that doe, I haven't had a picture or sighting of anything but bucks for days.

I think they are at the Tick Farm. I was wandering the property Monday and saw 13 does.

I wish I had some does, to be honest. Bucks are fun to watch, but does mean more numbers.

Do you have enough hunting area to manuever closer to the does?

Keep up the corn, and I'd bet the does will be there around the time they start dropping fawns.

Well, what do you mean by that when you say "manuver closer to the does"? I have maybe 125-50 acres of hunting area here.

And just because I know it was keeping you up at night, I did watch three does back there yesterday around 5:00. You can breath easy now.

That's enough to maneuver on.

They are at my house. SAMCRO, with you being very close to St. Louis proper, I would venture to guess you have a lot of folks hammering your doe population. Couple that with the fact that you have sharpshooters, etc..., in the area, and your sightings could be reduced. My in-laws in the Wildwood area rarely see deer anymore.

Snake, we live in a very rural area and hardly ever see deer. We might see them once in a while but out here they are mostly nocturnal. SC lives on the edge of a very populated area and the deer out there tend to concentrate in areas where there aren't as many houses, kids and dogs.

I don't think there are any sharp shooters around me, PS. There are a chit load of does somewhere. They used to be in my yard, but for weeks now, it's just bucks. I watched a group of 5 of them on Friday, same group on Saturday.

This area holds a high number of deer, I just think the does are somewhere else right now for some reason.

I wouldn't worry terribly much then. What I am always perplexed about is where do all of the big deer go once rifle season begins? Sure, a lot of them get whacked. But, they don't just leave the country. I spend a lot of hours on a stand in December. This year, I saw one mature buck.

PS, when the shooting starts around here the bucks all hole up on my neighbors 40 ac that is loaded with cedars. no one hunts there and he won't let us even walk it to push the deer out. i tried to buy him out but he won't sell. If a dog runs through there then the deer run on to our place. Plus we hear rifle shots all the time out of season so some of the local boys are shooting some supper.
