Garner's First

Due to circumstances beyond my control, we didn't go to the Tick Farm Friday night as planned. Instead, we got up early Saturday to go. Got there a little after daylight and unpacked our things. Turks were gobbling and we got out to them as soon as we could. Didn't get 100 yards from the cabin when I decided there were a couple close enough that we should get hidden. Three hens came by at about 7 yards, then later the gobblers came. G-Man shot one of them at 12 yards. He was very methodical about picking one out and staying with it. He wanted the biggest one and the one who strutted the most and gobbled the loudest. I didn't think he was ever gonna shoot, but finally did. We just stood there laughing and enjoying it for the longest time. It was a heck of a hunt. Over with in a little over 30 minutes.

I know there are other successful youths out there. Let's see some pics and hear some stories.

I took a 13-year old girl on her first turkey hunt on Saturday. Called in three toms within the first half hour, and she dumped the biggest one at 27 yards. 24 lbs, 10.5" beard. Good time.

I didn't want her to think it was always that easy, so we went back out and worked a few more toms just for fun.

Oh, and tell Garner his Daddy said "congratulations", and that bird will go great with mullberries.

Rafe and SC, that's great for both of you. At some point some of my little guys will want to get out and shoot a bird. We have been over run with a flock of 11 jakes running around our place following a big tom around. The gobbling is pretty intense. It's like that every spring until the season starts then they get lockjaw and you can't find them. I guess they must read the Conservationist and know when season starts.

Good job, SC. I'll let him know Uncle Craig is proud.
