How many whitetails have you killed?

Post by SAMCRO » April 3rd, 2012, 9:02 am

Just like it asks. How many whitetails have you killed, any weapon, any season. I realize many of us, myself included, will not have an accurate answer. I don't keep records, and I don't have pictures of most of them, but I can still make an educated guess.

Just wondering what your guess/answer is.

This one is hard to answer. I know one year I killed 10 and another year I killed 7. That was way back when I was young and foolish. This past year, 2. So, I have killed at least 19.

That being said, I killed my first one with a bow when I was 14 (1983). Didn't kill another deer until the fall of 1987, and that was my first gun kill. Hunting public land in southern MO was tough. I think I killed 8 or 10 during my college years with gun and bow.

I began making up for my lack of opportunities in the fall of 1993.

I can't even begin to make an educated guess. More than 50, less than 100 I suppose. I can get closer on gobblers because I have more than 60 beards in a box at home and know that I lost 8 or 10 before I began keeping track of them.

I don't keep records also, but have taken alot of deer over 46 years of hunting.started at 14 back in Michigan, was gun hunting at that time. did not take up bow until I turn 20.This I do remember and not to brag, I HAD two very good hunters who show me and taught me the woods. How to track and read sign a little bit diff than it is today. I have been skunk twice once at 17 and last year chasing a big boy.if you did not no but back in Michigan the deer where like rabbits and you could get alot of tags. I work for a insurance co and retired from them soooo knowing alot of folks in need I would help them out if I could. long story short I had fun and love the outdoors, sorry about the spelling. but thats my story.LP-ray

Good story Ray. I think I bought my first tag in 1963 when most of you goobers were not even thought of. I missed a few years in the military but have been at it a long time. I never kept track and didn't kill one every year especially in the 60's and early 70's and a couple years killed two. You guys will find that as you get older, unless you subsistence hunt, it's not about the killing. I have grandsons going now and that is more important than killing.

LP: I figure for the last several years I have killed 1 or 2 a year. Not more than that. I never bought in to the kill all the does you can mentality, especially after I became financially vested in my hunting farms. But, I was young and foolish once. It took me a couple good years of killing to realize it was too much work, and could become expensive. I'm still pissed, however, that I didn't kill 7 deer with the same arrow/broadhead. I think that would make for a good story.

that would make a good story. most I took with same broadhead was 3, it was a Zwickey black diamond..you had to sharpen yourself.

I wish I could get a better handle on the number I've taken. When I was young, I used to keep track of this, but as the years go by, I find myself not taking the time to do that. It's safe to say it's well over 100, but how far over 100, I have no idea.

Right now, I don't plan on slaughtering the way I have been. With the situation I'm in now, I plan on hunting deer at my place 99% of the time, and I have no desire to kill them all. I want to hunt them for a while.

I only killed 5 this year, and that's been my lowest number for years. I may take less than that this year.

SC, you are probably a stage 4 hunter at this point in your life. Take a look at this http://www.nodakoutdoors.com/hunter-stages.php. I would say that LP and myself are in hunter stage 5. SC that is an impressive number for any hunter. I have killed my share of them but no where near what you and PS have done.

I get as much a sense of accomplishment from letting deer pass at 15yrds as I do from killing them. I still need to whack 2-5 every year, but there's no way I would dick around with more than that for my own purposes just because I could kill'em. I also get irritated by the fact that I don't get opportunities at the quality of buck I'm looking for, but that won't happen very often where I'm located.

I need 2 deer a year to eat. I do all of the processing myself unless I have one made for burger or sausage. But, 2 deer a year is all I need. One big buck every other year for burger.

Like he has said, SAMCRO's days of wanton killer are going to end if he continues to hunt out of his back door. He'll enjoy seeing those deer around and studying them much moreso than killing them. Plus, he has a vested interest to keep them around whereas use to they were more out of sight out of mind. I'll bet that killing SOB starts putting acorns and rocks into his pockets to throw at them next fall.

Snake, you are absolutley right about the back door comment. The longer I have lived 60 yds. from my stand the more I just watch them. I'll shoot at a nice buck now and then but you get to the point that they are pets. Now, my sons in law and son are killer in the brown its down stage. I do feel different about turkeys though. I'll pop a turkey in second. I can process deer and make my own sausage and jerky so processor cost is not a factor. I make some killer smoked polish deer sausage.

Like others I haven't kept count over the years but it is several dozen whitetails. That also excludes the muleys I have taken.
