Gobblers

Post by RB » April 1st, 2013, 9:52 am

Any body hearing any tom's sound off yet? We have had a little activity early morning and none the rest of the day. Planning on at least some weekend hunts when season starts. How about you guys?

I was up yesterday morning putting a turkey on the smoker. I heard 2 somewhere within a few miles of the house.

PS, did you brine the bird first?

I haven't heard anything around my house, but did see a few strutting and gobbling down at the inlaws over the weekend.

RB: Did not brine it. But, it was awesome. Rubbed and injected it. Cooked it for 7 hours with the last 1.5 inside foil. Juciest bird I have had other than birds cooked via a turkey fryer.

PS, I like to inject the birds too. Hard to beat a smoked turkey that has been on the smoker for 7 or 9 hours. Did one last fall with half pork butt and all that was left was a small sandwhich bag of turkey. Probably 10 or 12 lbs of meat and only 8 people eating it. The people who were there had never had smoker turkey and I brined it and put on a rub and did it over pecan and black cherry. What kind of wood did you smoke with?

I drove to the St. Louis area last weekend and saw quite a few turkeys on Saturday between High Hill and Warrenton. They were still flocked up but a few gobblers were strutting around on the outside of the flock. I must have counted a hundered or so between the various flocks. Also quite a few deer out in groups as well.

TH, lots of turks in Warren county. We have some large flocks that hang around our farm. Have also seen groups of does hanging together in the pics from my trail cam. Youth season is this weekend and have some friends with younguns coming out to get some birds.

PS, do you think the hickory is kind of strong? I guess I over applied hickory smoke to a pork butt and it had a very strong smoke taste. The cherry is great and its dynamite with pecan.
