Crappie

Post by RB » April 19th, 2016, 10:18 am

Have any of you deviants been crappie fishing this spring? Wanted to see if anyone was fishing Truman and if they are on the banks yet. Going to give it a try and do some snagging on upper LOZ and Truman around Osceola. Tigerhaze, you been there lately? PS how bout you?

I have been over to the lake area but have been fishing strip pits and farm ponds more so than the lake itself. There just hasn't been enough rain to get flow into the lake to cause the whites to run significantly on the lake and the wind has been pretty strong lately to try and fish for the crappie until they are on the banks. Small ponds and lakes have good crappie action but it is still a little early for the crappie to be on the banks of the main lake. I have seen a fair number of snaggers on the Osage arm of the lake at Osceola and Taberville but not hearing of large ones being snagged upstream of there. You would probably do better snagging near Osceola rather than Taberville from what I have seen. If you do go to Osceola, be aware that the lake is below normal so that area is shallow. The recent rain may change it a little but I doubt it. if you do get over there post up as I am down that way every weekend going to my property in St. Clair County.

TH we are going Sunday to Wednesday. We'll be snagging at Osceola and crappie fishing around Talley. We'll snag LOZ out of Warsaw Sunday and may just stay there if it's good. We're staying in the Warsaw area.

Fished Saturday and Sunday around Berry Bend. We caught fish on the banks but they were scattered and all males. I would think this weekend should be prime for the big females. I don't know if I will get down there or not.

We only boated about 20 keepers. Not a female in the bunch.

PS, I talked to the place where we stay near Warsaw and they are hammering them in the lower Grand and Tebo. Hope we limit snagging and can get on some crappie.

That's what they said. They dumped 9 five gallon buckets of crappie carcasses yesterday just from their guests. Here's a pic they posted.Image

The weather this weekend will be good for crappie fishing- no storms until late Sunday evening. They are like turkeys in that consistent good weather will put the females on the banks quick- but a cold front or stormy weather and they will push back out to 5 foot of water. I will probably do some fishing on Truman in the afternoons and evenings this weekend after turkey hunting.

I ended up in the Warsaw area on Saturday instead of Sunday- had to get some work down at the farm with my brother Sunday. I fished the Pomme arm of Truman Lake Saturday evening for whites after working on my place there- overall fishing was slow so only managed one white but caught 6 or so shad on a crankbait. I did find a few morels even with the dry conditions.

Sunday was pretty windy so hopefully you weren't blown off the water. Good luck down there- seems like the weather is going to be a roller coaster the next couple of days.

Sorry for the delay on the update but our internet was out until last night. We spent most of our time snagging on upper LOZ which was slow but we did boat a nice one on day two. Truman crappie were on fire but the wind was really bad. The one cove where they were busting the bank we didn't have any minnows which is what all the successful guys were using. The wind did make it tough on everyone but fish were being caught right on the bank. Its probably still on for a while. Here's a pic of the spoonie we landed. Had a great time on the trip and spent all day Tuesday in the cabin due to storms but did get out and catch a few crappie. Still brought plenty of fish home with the spoonie.
