I've got cancer

Post by GoGop » June 29th, 2004, 6:18 pm

Cancer runs in my family, so starting at age 40 (I'm 45 now) I had my PSA checked every 6 months. It's still only 4.9, which isn't that high, but my doctor said since it was coming up to get it checked by a urologist. He did the finger deal, and said my prostate is enlarged on one side. He immediately scheduled me for a biopsy, which he took last Wednesday.
I've had no symptoms at all, and if not for the PSA test I'd have no idea that I have cancer.
My dad died in 1992 from cancer, and the first one he got was prostate cancer, so this kinda gives me the creeps. The worst part is that I don't want to make Bradley sad when he comes home from school today, but I have to.

I got my biopsy results today, and it's definate that I have prostate cancer. I have to go in July 13th and discuss my options with the doctor.

Hey GoGOP - My prayers are with you, too. Couple of thoughts on the subject.

First of all, the developments in medicine since your dad died 12 years ago are monumental. Your odds today as compared to 12 years ago are hundreds of times greater.

The other thing that is working in your favor is that you caught this early. I don't know the numbers, but your outlook having caught this early are excellent. The fact that you knew that you are in a high risk category and took the appropriate precautions tells me that you are courageous enought to face the facts. That is half the battle. There are a lot of people who don't get tested, because they don't have the courage to deal with it if they test positive.

I think I speak for everyone here - if there is ANYTHING we can do to help, let us know...

You have my number and everything. You don't hesitate to get a hold of me for anything.

Thanks everyone. Image I appreciate the offers, but hope I don't get to where I need to ask. Bradley took it really well, which helped me a lot. That's my biggest fear, letting that boy down.

Prayers are with you GoGop.

Kids are pretty resilient when it comes to that kind of news. I just found out a couple days ago that a long-time friend of mine was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Her worst fear was telling her only child (teenage son) since she is a single mom. He has handled the news pretty well considering and actually is providing a source of strength for her in her battle. She's gotta go in next week and figure out her options.

Best wishes to you.

Kurt....I'm really sorry to hear about the prostate cancer. You and Miss Ellie May have been through a lot in the short time I have known you through MWT and this forum. All three of you are "fighters", so you will come through this one with flying colors, too. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Kurt,
I never met you, but it's obvious you're a strong one. Smart, too, for regularly checking it. I'm 29, but I'll certainly make and keep appointments to catch cancers early, even though it doesn't run in my family. You can beat it for sure.

Guys, swallow your pride and do the finger test. It may be that it has saved Kurt's life.

Oh, and no pictures, please.

GC,

I am sorry to hear that. You have the first half of beating this thing whipped and that was catching it early. I will continue to pray for you and Ellie May. Stay strong and keep the faith.

Dude...this one brought me out of the woodwork for good. From what I have read about how you have handled this over the last two or three weeks...you have done just the opposite. I am sure Bradley is proud to have you as a dad.

Rick - for good all you mofo's

I also will do anything for you on one occasion Kurt - DON'T POST ANY DAMN PICTURES OF YOUR INTRALS FOR US TO SEE Image Image Image Image
