Limits!

Post by Ozark » June 13th, 2005, 12:37 pm

I had a good trip yesterday, 6/12. Went with a friend out of Isabella on Lower Bull Shoals and fished near the Point 11 area.

We were working the points, casting and slow-retrieving Roadrunners with nightcrawlers in 18 to 20 feet of water. We both got limits of walleyes between 18 and 20 inches, plus a big flathead cat, some keeper bass, and some very large bluegills.

That was fun. That area of Bull Shoals is a whole different lake from where I usually fish near K Dock - beautiful, deeper, lots more structure. People were catching good crappies there too, but I didn't get around to those. For right now, I think it's well worth doubling my driving distance to get there.

You're right, it IS like a different lake down there. Nice going!

My experience with walleyes is pretty limited, but I learned some things yesterday.

The bottom, where we were fishing on those points, is mostly boulders - some as big as a car. Naturally, when retrieving slow along the bottom, it's not unusual to get hung up. Since it's only rocks that's easy to fix - just use the trolling motor to get on the other side of it, and shake your lure loose.

I don't think I felt a walleye bite all day, though they put up a big fight on the way in. I learned, when I got hung up on a "rock", to put just a little pressure on it and hold still, just enough to put about a 2 inch bend in a light rod. Then, if I saw and felt any movement - set the hook.

I learned that "rock" is just as likely to be a walleye. They don't thump it like crappies or slam it like bass, and the fight comes after you hook one.

TR - Naw, that was the problem. Before last week's unsuccessful bass trip, I had replaced my frayed, fuzzy Fireline with 10 lb. Stren flourescent 'cause we were using a black light on that trip.

When we got to the walleye hole, I found my friend was using 4 lb. Fireline. In slow-trolling, he was bumping the bottom and I wasn't - the thick 10 lb. line was holding my lure up too high even when I let the whole spool out.

After he caught two keepers and I had no bites, I re-spooled one medium-light spinning rig with 6 lb. Berkeley Sensation, which I had on the boat.

That got me down deeper, and I actually caught most of the fish - but the Sensation has a lot of stretch to it. I bet I would have felt those walleye bites with Fireline, and that's what I'll have on the spool for my next trip there.

I think my friend's 4 lb. test is a little too light, though. He got down in the rocks and broke off a lot, and an unknown very big fish (big flathead, I think) spooled him and broke off while I was trying to get the motor started to chase it. I'll be using 8 lb. Fireline next time, which is just the diameter of 3 lb. monofilament anyway.

that is the only problem with fireline. ROCKS

Super lines don't like rocks. I have lost many $ in Bass tournaments because of the superlines. Image

They do have great results with crappie and trolling for eyes though. Image
