I took lessons, years ago. Ever since our fire in '98, I haven't picked much. I lost an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar & a nice amp in the fire, but I still have my Guild acoustic. I've been itching to get back at it, but it's gonna take a lot of re-learning...
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it...

Chairman,
Sorry to hear about the loss of your guitars. I bet if you pick that acoustic up it will all come back to you in a hurry. Here's a couple of good links I have found to help me, http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/tab.html
http://www.guitarnoise.com/
there are some interesting lessons on one and on the other you can just type in an artist name and it will show their songs, click on the song and it will show you the chords. Hope this helps.
Good Luck,

Thanks for the links, buckeye!

This should help get me back to "Pickin' & Grin'n"...

I don't know what kind of help I can offer you ~ just ask and I'll see what I can do...
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it...

Wellll..I played lead and rythym guitar, fiddle, bass, drums and a little keyboard almost every Friday and Saturday night at dances and in bars for just a little over 27 years, worked more than a few week long gigs in various places around the state. Five years in the 571st Air National Guard band as a trombonist and guitarist....everything but the trombone was self taught and picked up from others......waddaya wanna know?

Best piece of advice I can give you is that you HAVE THE DESIRE TO LEARN to play. If you have the desire you can do it.....if you don't, all the lessons in the world won't do you much good except to read music and play what's written. I started with a few old song books that had diagrams of the chords and learned every chord in every one of those books. I doubt most rockers who are famous know the sheer quantity of chords on a guitar that I know. I've been playing that instrument for 42 years. I progressed thru the simple stuff, country, folk, rock n' roll, on into big band and jazz, fell in love with classical and flemenco but never pursued either very much and I wish I had. Came back "home" to country music and have stayed there ever since. Waddaya wanna know? I'd be happy to tell you or help you in any way.

'Was an alto sax player but also took lessons in drums and trombone - never really any good.

Sharps,
I believe you're a little more advanced than me. Here I thought I was doing good cause I learned a few chords. My problem is the strumming technique itself. I hold the right chords and then sound like a jack*ss in a tin barn when I go to strumming. But I still enjoy it, and Im still trying!

I have no idea where you are in your experience. If we could sit down together with our guitars, if you're like I was, you'd learn more in 30 minutes of playing with a good picker than you can seek out on your own in six months. I learned an incredible amount just watching and playing with good pickers. Chord construction can be and is often learned from diagrams, as are progressions....but "licks" are often only learned from others or developed on your own. A fine ear or experienced ear can hear them on a radio, CD, tape or any other kind of reproduced music. I do not have a fine ear but it is experienced. You recognize what a picker is doing and learn how it's duplicated. It sounds as if you have everything needed and are headed in the right direction, now it's merely a matter of time, practice and expereince.

It's often been said that Chet Atkins style of guitar playing came from playing alone so much. Who knows....you may develop a new style and become more recorded that Chet Atkins as an instrumentalist. He holds the record as the most recorded solo, instrumentalist. Of course he was also the CEO of RCA Nashville at the time. Anyway....keep at it!!!!

I used to play some and sing a lot. Now, I just sing. I challenge PS to a contest of vocal talent. Image

Sing it for us, PS. Or do you need a few Coors Lights first?
