Bad Vibes in Arkansas

Post by Lakebumb » July 8th, 2005, 1:15 am

I stopped at the Walmart in Harrison today on my way home and got to talking to an older gentleman working in the sporting good dept. He showed me some pictures of some nice Eyes he and his wife caught on Bull Shoals. He had 5 nice ones with the biggest being 25".

Then he proceded to tell me how the walleye fishing on Bull Shoals has been ruined by the pros coming in last year and this year and KILLING over 1000 walleyes at each tournament. This guy was convinced that the PWT kept every walleye and donated them to some charity in Mountain Home. I told him that I was sure the live fish were released but he was very convinced they were not.

He was sure that every walleye caught dies unless released immediately. I explained the extreme efforts the pros go to to keep the fish alive and how todays boats are equipped to handle fish. When I mentioned fizzing the fish so they could swim upright he was interested in how that was done. I told him how to do it and he wrote it down and drew a diagram.

By the end of the conversation he was in a much better mood but what bothers me is that if he had this impression of what happens at walleye tournaments how many other people have the same feelings?

We all need to promote the possitive immage of tournament fishing. It only takes a few hard core loud mouths to kill a good sport. Image

That's funny...
I just went and counted how many fish were caught in the FLW tourney this year, and the number I came up with was 82!
That's a far cry from 1000..LOL I love the well informed... Image
All the fish were released.

Good point Juls. I checked the PWT results and even if my math is bad (I'm sure it is) we caught less than 600 fish in our event. IF we kept and killed every one form both tourney is would have been less than 700 walleye.

I am sure that there were a few that could not be released during the PWT, but even at 50% a far cry from damaging a resource.

Good thing I love this game or things like this would put me over the edge.

I knew the guy was wrong but did not have any data to argue with.
The best I could do at the time was defend the practices and procedures that you all use to keep fish alive.

I just hope there isn't a lot of people that have this opinion. The miss informed are dangerious people. Image

Whether it concerns Walleye, Bass or any other fish, someone in his position shouldn't be passing on falsehoods.
I would think Wal-Mart should be aware of the situation.
Its part of his job to pass on facts not fiction, in my opinion.

WalMart is in the business of passing on information on what you buy from them to local law enforcement...when the full extent of their spying on us comes out, hopefully there won't even BE a Wal Mart for him to get fired from.

Last August my wife and I and some friends went to Bull Shoals for a week. We stayed in the campground at Tucker Hollow. The general word was that the walleye fishing was not very good at the time. Although we caught walleyes everyday but one, most people weren't and I heard it several times from several people. "Ever since the PWT tournement was held, the walleye fishing had gone downhill".
The resident park manager was just postive that the PWT had ruined the walleye fishing in Bull Shoals. I didn't have any good arguments for him other then catching a few walleyes..... It is unfortunate that this is the way many people feel. Lakebumb brings up a good point. And to have a "sporting goods employee" at Walmart handing out false info is not good.....!

My K Dock trolling pattern hasn't been working this year. Obviously the problem is a combination of professional anglers committing wallycide, runoff from some trailer park in Hooterville, and the sinister agendas of OPEC and PETA. No way could the fish behavior have changed due to temporary weather and water conditions. No way could I have failed to adapt to these changes. No way could I be responsible for my inability to catch fish...

People in this area get board, they have nothing else to do but sit around and think up this crap . Let them think the fishing is bad , maybe they will focus on another spices or even another lake. They sure have been following me around , a couple of weeks ago had someone not only follow me ,they practicallywas running over my baits they were so close . Everybody does there own thing I guess.
