Going going gone..

Post by Jig Man » December 1st, 2005, 11:12 am

I was in Bass Pro yesterday. They are clearing out the Shimano Curado reels. The new ones will cost about $100 more.

Wow, they are one of the better ones on the market. I'm not sure they will have a replacement worth a $100 bucks more.

Leave it to corporate to screw up a good thing. I use Curado reels almost exclusively for bass fishing. I really don't see myself spending another $100 when I need to replace a reel.

That is why I decided to go ahead and get another SF now because it is 119 instead of 149 and will be 300 later.

They designed another model to take the place of the Curado that will (supposedly) be the same quality and price as the original. I don't recall the name of the new model, but rest assured, it begins with a "C". I don't see the rationale behind it, myself. Why screw with a good thing.

I saw an ad that the Citica is now $119, and has been redesigned. That model has been around for several years, and has historically had a 5.0:1 gear ratio. I've used one for crankbaits for quite a while. I don't know if they left the ratio alone, or bumped it to 6.3:1.

Are you sure they are locked into one gearing ratio? I bought a Curado 3.8 last year just for my deep cranking rod. Curado had numerous ratios for the same model reel.

You're right, the Curado's came in 6.3, 5.0, and 3.8. The Citica only came in 5.0. I don't know if that has changed for the Citica since the redesign and price increase.

fHow do you like the 3.8? I've got one in the truck right now that I'm selling. I just thought it was too slow, and never liked it very well. The guy that wants it is getting it strictly for deep cranking.

All I own are 6.3"s...If I want to slow down, I just crank a little slower. Now that for me is kind of a hard job, but I like the idea I can get the fishes head coming toward me and not letting it dictate where it wants to go when it is hooked.....

I have several Curados and TD's, but only one is a slow crank. I'm with Triton, while the idea sounded good, the slow cranker makes no sense to me now because I use feel more than any other thing to regulate a crank.

I do like the 5.0 for crankbaits. I tend to fish faster and faster and faster... Then I wonder why I haven't been bit in the last hour!
Everything else is a 6.3 Curado.

I like it but it is limited to its few roles. I know it isn't going to be good for getting a buzzbait up on plane so I usually have something like a DD22, Wiggle Wart or a deep diver Frenzy tied on to it. It definitely makes my retrieves much more thorough. I also use a C5 Mag X that performs very good for hefting out the heavy hardware like the big crankbaits.

I guess I can't shake the old school, no anti reverse, thumb for a drag and you had to feel the Lucky 13 to be sure the speed was right. Image
