High Vertical Tear

Post by deer_slayer » February 22nd, 2006, 9:59 am

I just bought a new Switchback XT and I can't get it paper tuned. It keeps tearing high and nothing I do seems to make a difference. I moved the nock point down, no change. I let someone else shoot it, no change. I adjusted the spring tension on my drop-away rest, no change. I tried a heavier spined arrow, no change. I'm really confused on this one. Anyone have any thoughts on how to get this thing tuned?

DS moving the nock point down will raise the arrow, have you tried moving your pins? My thought would be to level the arrow and move you pins. you could also using a single pin, walk backwards until the arrow hits the target right measure the distance.

As bad as I hate to admit it, but MoCraig would surely have some idea about this...No kidding..or some of the aimlow guys or even I170....Now if you need to know about sheathing your knife, I would recommend PS...

I cant understand how if you are making changes it wouldnt show up on the paper...How far from the paper are you shooting it?

Take it back to the bow shop, have them fix it.

Deer Slayer,

What kind of drop away rest are you shooting?

Big John, your sight pins aren't gonna have anything to do with how your bow paper tunes... unless for some strange reason the arrow is hittin the sight??!!

ds, I would say you must be makin arrow contact somewhere. Possibly your drop-away is not set hi-enuff and you are clippin somethin. Have you tried puttin powder on the shelf to determine if your makin contact? If not, you might want to try it.

... of course the easiest fix would be to just replace that drop-away with a WB.

I'm shooting the Mathews drop away rest. I was about 5 yards from the paper. I haven't tried powder to check for contact yet. I guess I need to try that next, but just "eye-balling" it, I can't see how it would be making contact anywhere.

Turn you arrow over if you think you may be getting contact with the rest/shelf and fletching. Just put the cock vain up instead of down. It won't affect arrow flight at all if you are getting the proper clearence, but will show improvement if you cock vain is making contact.

I would just go the the bow shop myself. Those guys deal with this stuff more times in one week that you or I would in several seasons.

Have you tried lowering and or Imageg your poundage a few pounds? Sometimes this will fix your problem. Other than that it sounds as though you have some sort of clearance issue, although you have said it doesn't seem possible. Don't even pay attention to your pins at this point, unless you need one to keep from missing your paper completely.

Clearance. Vanes are hitting. Get a WB to equalize that and you'll be tuned in minutes.

Sad thing is, all of this has been at my local archery shop, with 3 different techs assisting in trying to find a solution. Last thing they told me was, "Just keep shooting it a while and let everything settle in". To me that sounded more like they just wanted me out of their hair since they couldn't figure it out. I have been emailing back and forth with Mathews today and I have some better information now on how to adjust the rest. I'm going to make some adjustments there first, then maybe try a lighter field tip (I was using 100gr, guess I'll try 75gr). After that, I may try backing off the poundage a little.

I wouldn't go the lighter tip route. If anything, maybe a heavier tip to stabilize the arrow. If you put a lighter tip on, while shootin heavy poundage/high speeds, you're gonna get more erratic arrow flight if anything.

I do agree with that Hobie...I would think that 100g would be okay...Are you sure you are shooting the correct arrow shaft and all?
