Friend of mine found 2 reds yesterday afternoon...they were about the size of grapefruits.

The land he was walking is pretty much one big hillside...north facing. Go figure.

Mushrooms don't know north from south. Found the dang things growing in a pasture before. Not a tree in sight. Definitely the exceptance rather than the rule but like you said...go figure.

Never really hunted for reds that much as I don't eat them. But with morels, I generally find them first in the areas that get the most direct sun (edges of woods, bottomland and south facing slopes). Notice I said "generally". With those damn things, anything is possible!! I found them in one place here in mid-Mo where they were out in the middle of a sand flat, left over from the floods. No "woods" or large trees, very little grass or other vegetation and a couple of real small trees.

Found some about the size of grapes in the apple orchard today so they should be popping in the woods any day now.
