The Maverick strikes again

Post by Limbshot » November 6th, 2006, 12:33 pm

Well I realize he isn't any book buck, but he is the second biggest I have taken with a bow. After hunting all week last week, he was the biggest buck I had seen in the woods, and I had seen him 3 times, then on Friday evening, after fine tuning my stand locations, it all came together. I shot him at 40 yards, and recovered him in 30. Unfortunately, after the shot, he fell pretty hard and broke his left G-2. Went back in Saturday to try and find it, but could not. Either way, I am pretty pleased with him, and look forward to the day I can pass on a deer like this with a bow in hand!!! Image.

Yeah, but I am killing all kinds of stuff this year, and that is what really matters. I did mean to put my hat on for the pics, but I forgot!!! 2 turkeys and two deer so far. Still have a little ways to go. If I can shoot another buck and another doe after firearm season, I'll probably call it quits for the year. Now I need to get a deer for Mrs. LS. That is my goal now!!!

Cograts! Out of curiosity, how old do you think that deer is? The rack says one thing but the head and body size say another.

I'd say he's in his mid to upper 30's.

PS, that is an interesting question. We debated that quite a bit. His rack says 2.5 year old, but his body and big old noggin scream 3.5 I thought. I'll tell you this, when I saw him coming through the woods, his body looked huge! The pics are somewhat misleading, as his body makes his rack look a bit smaller than it really is. I am convinced he was 3.5 years old.

Nice buck LS.

I noticed you only have 1 arrow in your quiver.

Do you only hunt with 1 arrow?

I noticed smitty had a whole bunch of sticks in his quiver yet.

I haven't bowhunted ever since i got into the ducks.

When i did, i too only carried 1 arrow also.

I have a bunch of arrows in my quiver just for looks. I only shoot once or twice a year. Last year 3 times.

No way in Hades that deer is 1.5 years old. I saw plenty of 18 month old deer last week, and they were all considerably smaller than this one, both in body size and in Image. One was an 8 pointer, but he was scrawny and his rack was very wirey. This deer has a much bigger body, a swollen neck and a large head.

That is a Callaway County deer. Just across the Mo river from Jeff. The farm is miles away from any type of crop land or anything like that. I have no idea what he weighed, didn't have him weighed, but comparing him to the small 8 the 5 pointer and the spike that I saw, all of which were clearly 18 month old deer, I can tell you he is considerably larger than they were. There were all scrawny looking little turds, this guy looked much bigger coming through the brush. I do believe he is a 2.5 year old deer, and I do not believe the pics do him much justice as far as bodt size. I am pretty confident he weighed more than 125 dressed.

As far as age goes,i believe the reference is directed to snout in the top pic.

If i were you LS - for anyone who doubts the actual age of the critter in question - just send each one a tooth so they can carbon date. Image

I really don't care how old it is--Nice Buck.

How does it taste?

Thanks KF, he is mighty tasty. In regards to your earlier question, I typically have 3 arrows in my quiver (2 on this day). I could not find the first one I hit him with (spine shot) arrow likely demolished.
