from MDC FY05 annual report:

Conservation agents contacted 199,810 hunters and anglers in FY05. During theses contacts, agents noted 24,552 violations, issued 4,151 written warnings and made 7,126 arrests with a 93% conviction rate.

That?s what about 3 ? 4 % of the people they ?contact? that get busted.

I'm not a fan of check points I seem to get "contacted" every time I'm in a boat.

I saw one guy who had placed the transportation tag on the deer's rear leg, called into the tele-check system, wrote down the 8 digit number they provided, BUT then didn't attach the remaining portion of the tag to the deer like it says. He got a $159 ticket Image.

I say bullcrap!

The checking procedure specifically states the following:

1. Immediately after harvest, separate the transportation tag from your permit and attach it to the game?s leg. You may now legally transport your game within Missouri.

2. Check your deer or turkey using the Telecheck instructions listed above.

3. Write your confirmation number on your permit.

4. Immediately attach your permit to the game, and the checking procedure is completed.

The rules also state:

"Deer and turkey must be checked by 10 p.m. on the day the game is harvested."

Assuming it was not after 10PM on the day of the harvest, assuming he was the original "taker" of animal, assuming he had not crossed a state line, assuming he had not begun processing or removed the head from the body...he had until 10PM to finish the checking procedure as it is clearly defined. According to the "Letter of the Law" the checking procedure is complete when the confirmation sticker is placed on the animal and you have until 10PM to do it.

From a highly well placed anomyamous source within MDC... The report is most major MDC violations noted at check points are illegal turkeys and bobcats.(They couldn't help it) The other LEOs present are for the D&D, DUI and other civil violations. Most check points are in high hunter concentrations or known violater territories. That is all.

If you look at those stats, they don't state whether the 224,000+ violations included multiple violations by the same people or not; the same goes for the written warnings. I would guess that the written warnings were "ticky-tack" technical violations. I would also assume that they included non-sportsmen using MDC areas (such as kids partying, etc.) in their stats.

I support legitimate law enforcement stops and inquiries- I don't support the premise of checkpoints which is "presumed guilty until found innocent".

At the Tick Farm, you can't get cell reception. If you're on a multi-day hunt and get a kill early on, you'd have to drive a distance to get sufficient reception to call it in. The turkey I killed may or may not have been 100% legal, I suppose. After all, I had to dress it out and there's not much of a place to tag a dressed turkey carcass. However, it would've been incredibly easy to have not checked it at all & no one would've known any different.

I heard rumor that MDC mailed out tickets to those that teleched minutes after purchasing the tag.

2shot - Oh definitely not a rumor. More likely a knock on the front door than a letter. When you telechek it shows time of purchase and time of check-in. Image Image Image

Oh, Did you know that agents can check time of tag purchase against check in time ???

Fish - If I remember right, some folks found out about that last year.....THE HARD WAY!! Didn't one dude actually buy his tag AFTER legal hunting time and then turn around and telecheck a deer on it a little later that evening? Image

I've bought tags on my way out to hunt. If it was checked "a little later that evening" I don't see anything wrong with it. If it had been checking in a few minutes later, that would be a problem.

GoGOP - I think you missed the point. The tag was bought AFTER legal hunting had ended for the day (let's say it was bought at 7:00pm). The dude then checks a deer on that tag at 8:00pm that same night. So either he shot a deer THEN went and bought his tag or he spotlighted it after he bougth the tag. Either way, i believe he was rat forked!

ODF - Yep, Stupidity should Hurt and in these cases it cost $$$ to.

GoGop - There is common sense involved here. Its the ones that bought a tag at Wal-Mart at 500 and check a deer at 515 from the parking lot that throws a big red flag with telechek Image Don't know exactly what the window is from time of purchase to check in time is before it is flagged tho Image
