Re: Deer Survey
RB,
I thought about what you said so I filled it out this morning and it is sitting in the mail pile. There is a few minutes of my life that I will never regain but if I don't fill it out I don't have the opportunity to voice my opinion.
Nothings is going to change significantly in Missouri in the near future. We are to dependent on the weekend warrior and the sales tax to ever purposely make too many people mad at once. The perfect example of this is OOS license fees, we are one of the absolute lowest cost states to hunt for almost any species. Look around to bordering states and they are all waiting to break it off in you.

Re: Deer Survey
You make some good points fishin. I decided a long time ago that deer hunting for me is about the experience in camp and maybe some meat in the freezer. I have too many important things to worry about. If we want another debate look how they forked up the trout situation. Now the hatcheries just produce fewer fish and we have not seen a noticeable increase in fish size especially on Taney. Another example is your home lake at Mark Twain. Look at all the slab crappie you can catch up there.....not.

Re: Deer Survey
What happened to MT lake? I've never fished it for crappie, but back in the 90s, that is all I heard about... the slab crappie on MT. Who cares about the trout on Taney?

Re: Deer Survey
The trout deal is BS. MDC just told trout fishermen to be happy with fewer fish in the river, and smaller limits, because that's the was its going to be.
Also with the conservation sales tax (which I'm in favor of), MDC would do whatever the fork they wanted and not be hurting for money like every other state conservation agency. Tag sales don't affect them like they do every other state in the nation.

Re: Deer Survey
For slab crappie go to Kinkaid Lake in S. Illinois.
Moving seasons around would not effect tag sales anyway. The people that gun hunt will hunt whenever the season falls. I can't imagine people giving up hunting or burning down Powder Valley in a revolt against MDC.

Re: Deer Survey
Deer camp is really the same for me especially gun season it is about tradition and spending time with friends old and new.
I was deeply involved when they did the restrictions on Taney, in fact I fought toe to toe with Phil about what a bad idea it was. They have not accomplished their goal of bigger fish but what happen in the end was a bunch of people whining enough to get their way. As for the new regulations it boils down to Taney is essentially a pay lake and they are no longer willing to stock as many fish so they reduced the limit. They would raise the limit to 10 per day if they wanted to stock a million fish a month.
Many years ago MT was really hot but after a fish kill in ??? things have never been the same, there is an overabundance of small fish but with no length or slot limit they will never solve the problem. They are really not managing the lake at this point to make it a better fishery they need to convince everyone to keep every 5 and 6 inch crappie they catch for a time period and let the 8 to 10 inch fish go.
I also support the MDC tax but it has killed our ability as citizens to hold them accountable for what they do vs. what we are sportsmen want to happen. They are responsible for everything from season limits to hiking trails but they have no one holding them accountable because they don't have to be, they have no one to answer to they already have the money and the power.

Re: Deer Survey
fishin, right on with all the points you made especially about MT. I have fished that lake since it opened and have seen the crappie quality go smaller and smaller. In the late 80's and early 90's we would catch some huge specs there. It is however a great place to teach kids to crappie fish because they can catch a ton of little ones and stay interested. I won't even get started on the trout thing.

Re: Deer Survey
My wife got a survey last night and there wasn't one darn word about any of this stuff mentioned. I'm wondering if they have more than one survey? When I saw it in the mail, I told her not to bother that I would fill it out. She corrected me real soon stating that she could do it.

PS, she must have gotten the one that goes to the wives of hunters who shoot, wound and don't find their deer.

Correction there jackass. I always find them. If not, I search for roadkill for months and claim it as my own.
