Is Iowa worth it?
I already hunt MO and IL, and I know I'm going to end up in divorce court, but I have a chance to lease 240 acres of mostly crop ground, approx.200 crops and 40 in long wooded draws through the property in South Central Iowa. How hard is it to get a tag? It looks pretty tough and pretty expensive. After lease and tag I will have approx. $1,000 tied up in probably a late season muzzleloader hunt for 20 days. Is it worth it? I know its good but is it that much better than MO and IL? By the way, I may need 1 more person or I may turn my contact over to someone who is interested if I turn it down. FYI, BT

A friend of mine applies for a tag every year, and heads up there a day or two early. Then he knocks on doors, or stops and talk to the Amish and gets permission to hunt. Says he never had trouble getting permission to hunt for deer and pheasant.

Some of the largest bucks are located in that neck of the woods, that's where the world record buck was killed, around Albia. I realize the worlds largest buck was found dead in missouri, but he was probably an Iowa buck on vacation, and died from a heart attack after he seen all them doe deer prancin around.

Re: Is Iowa worth it?
Thanks guys for putting some common sense into my head. I don't think I will lease the property. If I decide to apply for a tag and get one, I'll then pursue finding a spot. I can't justify leasing the ground unseen and paying pretty good money for it. The grass is not always greener is what I needed to hear. I'm gonna turn down the lease option right now.

I know guys that hunt IA, and agree it is not worth it to lease. Too easy to get permission just by asking. They see a lot of big deer. MO doesn't come close to what they have. Yep, the grass is greener in IA, IMO.

I can tell you this; if the price is right, I will pay it.
