Help with Taneycomo

Post by TobyfromMO » August 26th, 2008, 12:51 pm

Anybody help a guy out w/fishing Taneycomo?

I was invited by a friend on their annual fishing trip to Taneycomo in January. I don’t have any of the details yet but apparently they’ve been doing this for several years and it’s grown to a fairly big gathering as he rattled off about 20-30 names already committed. Thus far the only instructions I’ve been given are to bring my boat, a fishing partner and a lot of beer.

I’ve got the beer & boat thing down. My dilemma is I’ve never been on Taneycomo nor have I ever fished for trout. To further complicate the issue none of my beer chugging/fishing buddies have Taneycomo/trout fishing experience either. So at this point I’m looking forward to two drunk guys in a boat with no idea what their doing or where their going. Thus far is doesn’t sound all bad but I’d like to have a clue before hitting the water.

I’ve done a little reading on the web but other than your terminal tackle requirements what I have found has not been much help.

I’ve got ½ dozen or more 5’ – 6’ ultra-light, light & medium action spinning rigs so I should be good there. 2-4lb test line is understood. I got plenty #6 - #10 hooks along with plenty 1/32 – 1/4oz split-shot and egg sinkers.

At this point I’m clueless with determining what conditions determine live vs. artificial bait selection (type/color), water/river structures to key in on (i.e. bottom structure, depth, eddies, bank structure), line rigging methods/techniques for either drifting or casting and (most importantly) where to go. The erratic or unpredictable nature of the water flow/depth and how it affects fish activity has got me confused as heck.

I was told most all the guys typically fish from Fall Creek to the Hwy 65 bridge. I understand above Fall Creek is the trophy area which comes with a specific set of rules but other than that the description they gave tells me nothing more than two places on a map.

Get some Power bait, a couple jars in different colors, orange, yellow, and maybe white. Use a size 16, or 14 treble hooks, split shot or slip weights, and some 2-4lb line depending on how high/fast the water is running. While you're at it, throw some white, black or olive jigs 1/100oz-1/16oz.

Don't forget your needle nose pliers, you might have to handle your prick if you have to pee.

That is Lilley's Landing web page and you'll get some good(and true) info. IMHO opinion the only place to stay on the lake. We'll be down there next week for four days.

Be prepared for a crowd in January. More people fishing then than the fourth of July.

I think we are staying at Lilleys' but I'm not even 100% sure of that.

WM...with the jigs...throw'em, drift'em or both? Some of the reports I've read on the net report guys are drifting jigs on a drift rig...also heard it called a Taneycomo rig. This seamed strange because in my mind a guy would be more inclined to drift with the live bait (floating of bottom) and throwing jigs. I guess they are lifting/twitching the jigs off bottom the entire time while drifting.

Also...when throwing jigs...are you throwing upstream, downstream or across stream allowing the jig drift down with the current? Again, in my mind down stream would allow the best control over your line but I wasn't sure if the direction of your presentation makes a difference. I've read only one report that said to throw 45 degrees down stream and that most strikes would happen on the swing just before the jig was directly down stream of the boat.

Styrofoam float, jig heavy enuff to get down with the current flow. Experiment to see what/how they want it. Personally if they run water drift w/ power bait or crawlers.

Another killer bait for stocker size fish that you don't hear about much is crickets. I've only fished Taney two or three times, but I've fished trout parks, and trophy trout areas a bunch, and you'll learn that anything can work sometimes, but when you find what's hot for that day, don't fight it, just take advantage and wear that pattern out.

For drifting, it is done mostly with micro jigs 1/100-1/64oz and either float along with your boat, or cast the jig/bobber upstream and let it come back to you. Mix it up and see what works. Try different colors, depths, and presentations like dead drift vrs jigging, etc.

Also, don't be shy about throwing a decent size jig or lure. The last time I was at Taney, I tied on a 1/16 or 1/8 oz olive maraboo, and caught 4 between 14" and 17" while casting from a dock.

Just go out and fish man.

If they are running water go up to the cable and throw white 1/16 or 1/8 oz jigs. I throw them perpendicular to the boat and drift with them while pumping the rod slowly up and down. If the water is not running and no wind anchor and fish power bait or inflated night crawlers off the bottom. Use an egg hook, not treble, with the barbs also on the bait. One white power bait and one red, chartreuse, orange or whatever the color is the tell you to use at Lilley's. 2 or 4 lb green lo vis line. If you want to drift bait, water running, go up to fall creek and drift down keeping the boat across the current and throw up stream of the boat. If you are fishing off the dock, use power bait or inflated night crawlers on the bottom. You can also drift micro jigs, 1/100 under a float 4 or 5 feet in a slow drift especially if it is windy. Also throw rapala stick baits in F7 to 10, rainbow or silver, if it is cloudy. With the raps fish them just like for bass. Works best for browns. Check with the staff at Lilley's as they are very knowledgeable on what is working while you are there. It sounds like you are fishing in the Boswell event. That's all I know about Taney except for the secret bait that fish and I use which is confidential.

JD, good luck next week. Don't let Ms. S outfish you again this time.
