IL late season buck
Shot this one Saturday evening. He was tending a doe in a bean field when I first saw him. I tried calling him in, and he re-acted each time I did, but he wouldn`t leave the doe. After not seeing him for awhile I assumed that they had moved further into the bean field. A little while later I saw the doe coming my way. Sure enough he was following behind. She came by at 15 yards, and I thought she was going to jump the fence beside me. I wish she would have too. The buck was closing the distance, when the doe turned and came straight to my tree. She was standing underneath me, and the buck turned to cut her off. He stepped out into the bean field at 42 yards, and I knew he wasn`t coming any closer. The doe smelled where I stopped to put on my outer layer of clothes, she blew and bolted back the way she came. I drew my bow as soon as I heard her. The buck didn`t move. I put my 40 yard pin on the lower 1/3 of his vitals, and the arrow was on its way. I didn`t see the arrow hit him, but he ran about 50 yards, and stopped, and I saw the exit hole about 6 inches behind the shoulder pocket, and low. I thought he was going down right there, but he limped off in the direction the doe went. He laid down another 60 yards beyond that. He stood up a couple times, but laid right back down. I was sure he was almost done. His head was still up as darkness fell, so I decided to come back this morning. I got a little anxious, and nervous, when he wasn`t where I left him last night. He didn`t make it far though. Field dressing revealed an x in the liver, and one lung. These older deer just don`t want to die. Forgot to mention that it was one cold SOB out there this morning.

One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who did not whine, nag, or bitch.
But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.

Awesome deer, 170. I'll be hunting IL next week. Maybe I'll have a similar post in about 14 days. Except my picture won't be so damned ugly.

It will be if we should happen to cross paths, Fabio. Your face will be more jacked-up than normal, after the pummeling I`m gonna give you.Rafe Hollister wrote:Except my picture won't be so damned ugly.

Re: IL late season buck
Great job 170. Really good late season buck.
Was the buck actually tending the doe like a late rut, or was he just following her?
Either way, great job toughing out the cold. Man, it was brutal on this side of the state.

Very nice 170. That is a good one for sure. I hunted a bit this weekend, but sure as heck didn't see anything like that! Nice shot too, especially since you had to shoot in a hurry! It is amazing how tough they can be. Great deer buddy!

Re: IL late season buck
When they first showed up he was just staying beside her. When I would grunt, or snort/wheeze at him he would come to the edge of the woods, and stare my way, then go back to her. This happened four times. An hour later she came by at a pretty quick pace, like she was trying to keep some distance between them.Warmouth wrote:Was the buck actually tending the doe like a late rut, or was he just following her?

What kind of generic electronics store do you buy your stuff at? Can`t see these pix, can`t get the pics I text you, probably still play Pong on your Atari too. Send me your address, and I`ll snail mail you a copy. Check with MOCraig after Christmas, and maybe he`ll give you his old stuff.TobyfromMO wrote:All I see is F’ing red x’s…but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Congratulations!
