12 Degree Does
I watched a cut beanfield for a couple of nights and saw upwards of 50 deer gorging themselves on beans for this cold front. But I waited till I could pick out this 300 pound doe and a much smaller 200 pound one.

"a whole pile" could be the answer to alot of questions on this board. Two Tall the Neanderthal wrote:The most logical response would be... "a whole pile."
Nice going TTtN. You are the ultimate predator, fo sho.

That’s a girl’s gun. Given the fact you typically carry your kill out of the woods by the scruff of the neck I figured you’d opt for something different. Something in the 25-30lb range. You know something semi-auto…say from Barret. Two Tall the Neanderthal wrote:Browning Mountain TI in 300wsm... 5 pounds 8 ounces... It will be in all my pics next year for you to point out.

I need something that kicks hard enough to detach my retina when I shoot it or it's just not sporting.

Re: 12 Degree Does
TTN-Looks like you shot thhat smaller doe head on right through the brisket. Good shot.
I carry about a 9lb Ruger 300wm. It is a beast, but dam if it won't put bullets where you're aiming. My favorite two shots with it: Doe at around 110yrds facing dead away. Her head popped up, and a 180 grn hornady put a trench from between her ears to the tip of her nose. Bang flop.
The other was a coyote loping almost dead away (maybe 10 degree angle) 80yrds out. I was on the ground under a cedar, and put the croshhairs on the base of his tail as he was on the highest point of his bounce. After two or three strides, I shot, he rolled, and I was almost afraid to go look at the mass of flesh that was left. There was a .30 cal hole in the back of his neck, and the bullet must have exited his mouth, because there was no other mark on that now bug-eyed yote. I tanned that one and the one I had just shot in the nose facing me 30 min earlier. The one that was facing away looked better after tanning, with his head intact and all.
If you're hiking in steep terrain in thin air, the lighter rifle is the way to go.

Re: 12 Degree Does
You are correct Dave. The smaller one was a dead on facing me shot about 160 yards. She ran out there and stopped after I put a perfect lung shot on the older doe around 210.
It was like the best of both worlds. I like to poke a perfect hole in thier lungs broadside and watch them run 60 yards then get the wobbly legs and crash, and it's also a sight when you put one right in the brisket between the front shoulders and it looks like you turned them off with a lightswitch.
On another note, I'm a total convert from what I used to reload. I was nothing but a ballistic tip shooter for years and they work well, but these Barnes Triple shock X bullets are just brutal. The new polymer tipped TSX bullet flat smokes critters and print on paper like a laser beam.
I killed three this year with that combo. 7mm WSM loaded with 120 grain tipped TSX bullets rolling out the barrel at 3500fps. I've not recovered a single bullet yet from this combo, but I'd imagine they are as predictable as the .308 ones I used sometime back. They curl back to form 4 perfect copper petals and loose about 2 grains of weight no matter what they hit.

Wicked F’ing combo…makes me want to reconsider. Two Tall the Neanderthal wrote:7mm WSM loaded with 120 grain tipped TSX bullets rolling out the barrel at 3500fps.
As you know I’ve been considering a .25-06 for a similar results…but 7mm, 120gr, 3500fps…wow…not to mention sending the message with a Barnes X. IMO...Barnes is second to none.
I’d be the proverbial “kid in the candy store” with that thing in my hands…though I couldn’t afford to shoot anything other than hand loads.
I’m jealous.

Re: 12 Degree Does
That is a wicked deer combo.
I just bought a reloading kit, and will be loading for the 300wm and 257Roberts. Those two rounds will break you if you buy factory, if you can find what you're looking for. I have been considering the TSX, as well as standard hornady pills.
For the first time ever this year I recovered a 165grn hornady from the 300wm. 20yds shot both shoulders. It was a nice mushroom, but WTF!!! You don't shoot deer with a 300 so you can recover the F'n bullets. It fdid latten the buck though.
Toby, you can't go wrong with the 25-06 for deer.

Re: 12 Degree Does
Which loading kit did you buy? I currently have a single stage Lee. I bought it from Denny Dennison’s after the big fire. Nothing more than a smoke damaged box and I got for about 80% off…couldn’t pass it. It’s a cheap press but it works like all the rest...though I sometimes squint one eye shut in anticipation when resizing 45-70 brass.Warmouth wrote:That is a wicked deer combo.

I’ve started shopping for a Dillon. The wife and I just completed our CCW. For what ever reason she has found interest in the idea of conceal carry and self defense. It was her idea to take the class. Now she wants to take “In the house” and “Out of the house” self defense instruction. At this point I can’t keep up with a single stage nor can I afford to continue buying over the counter.
