Re: 12 Degree Does
Speaking in terms of the 25-06 Barnes just released a brand new tipped TSX in .257
It's 80gr and would be a smoker....
Toby, you could get that to 3500 in a 25-06
and Dave I bet you could do just shy of the same in the Roberts.
Also Dave, they have a 130 in .308 TSX... you might ponder that for your 300
That's all I will load in my new Titanium 300wsm. I should be able to sneak that 130 up to the 3500 mark as well... I wouldn't hesitate to take bull elk with that combo.
Don't let the light wieght scare you. I tried out the 85 tsx in .243 and it zipped right thru deer shoulders at much less velocity.
In fact guys are loading a 53 grain in .223 and .22-250 and are flat smashing deer with these tiny bullets and they are not coming apart.
Here is an old pic of .308 barnes 150 TSXs I dug out of a buck and the dirt on a doe pass thru.

Re: 12 Degree Does
Toby, I also bought a Lee single stage, but not the cheepest. I can't get to it now to see which model it is exactly. I was hoping to get IMR 4350 to work for both cartridges, but we'll see what happens.
I'm going to go with 165-180grn for the 300, and either a 100grn barnes or a 110 nosler accubond in the Roberts. Looks like Barnes now has an 80grn .257 bullet. That sounds interesting.

Read it again Dave I edited it to include more for the 300
Also you should holler at me I have a bunch of .257 bullets left and nothing to load them in.
Accubonds, barnes, sierras.

I'd take those accubonds. They were something I was interested in loading anyway.

IMR 4350 is great powder for this application.Warmouth wrote:Toby, I also bought a Lee single stage, but not the cheepest. I can't get to it now to see which model it is exactly. I was hoping to get IMR 4350 to work for both cartridges, but we'll see what happens.

TTN...I agree with your comments regarding bullet weight. Obviously delivered energy is always a consideration but the argument is most always trumped by comments claiming shot placement is the key…both true. That said, a 130gr pill from Barnes…retaining it’s shape and most of its weight…will out perform heavier bullet of lesser quality. Not only to say outperform…the Barnes…retaining it’s shape/weight means you get a good wound channel vs a lesser bullet pulling apart and going 3 different directions once inside the animal.
Though they may not be necessary for light skinned game, they would be my absolute choice if/when I get to hunt something bigger.
