Well it happened!!!

Post by Limbshot » November 2nd, 2009, 11:41 am

Took my 10 year old son out this weekend, and let me tell you he was a freaking trooper! We sat for 8.5 hours on Saturday and did not see a deer one. I did take my bow with me in case some turkeys showed up, and they did Saturday evening. Saw a group of 7 and a group of 3 longbeards but they never got clsoe enough to shoot. Helped pass the time for him though!

Had to switch spots yesterday morning because the Gasconade River was rising so much that it actually flooded our river bottoms. We headed out before dark and jumped a deer right at the stand. Went ahead, got up and got settled, and didn't see much of anything. Then at about 9:15 I looked out on the finger of the ridge we were on and saw a leg move. It was too far away for a shot at that time, so I told him to just keep and eye in that area. Then the deer cleared the brush and into a sunny opening and we could see his antlers. "It's a buck, it's a buck" was all I could hear, as he started getting excited. I grunted at him with no response, as he continued walking away from us. I did a loud doe bleat and he finally looked in our direction, but continued walking farther away. I grunted a couple more times and he just kept walking. Then he was gone. I picked up the antlers and did a real light rattle sequence for about a minute and put them away and grunted twice more, and we waited. After about 2 minutes I hear "Man Dad, I really think we need to come back to this place this evening, I think this is a good spot." I turned to him and said "we aren't done yet buddy, that deer could easily circle back around and come back to check us out. He heard us calling, and he will get curious." I just finished saying that and looked out in front of us, and I saw a tail flick right behind a big cedar, then a leg move. I told him he was back, and he got excited. The deer walked forward where we could see him and he rubbed a tree then rubbed his head an antlers all around the tree and started walking across in front of us at about 60 yards. He was already in shooting position, but having a hard time finding the deer in the scope. The deer stepped into an opening and I grunted and he froze looking straight ahead. I pulled the gun over a little on the shooting rail, and hear "OK, I have him in the scope, it is perfect, right behidn the shoulder." I told him to ease back on the trigger, nothing. Then he pulls his head up, and I hear a "click" as he clicks the safety off  and he settles back in and I told him to ease back again, and BOOOM, with that the deer falls right where he is standing! We started with the high fives and hugging and went down to see his first kill! I have to be honest, I thought he hit him in the spine, but upon inspection, he hit him perfectly, as the pics will show!!! I am so proud of the little guy, he stuck with it, and made a fantastic shot! BTW the orange jacket and hat were removed only for the pics!

Wow Russ that brings back some memories. Tell the young man congratulations, and welcome to the brotherhood. Just the first of many for you two, I hope.

But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.

LS, that is truly a special memory that neither of you will forget. Glad you are passing on the passion to your son.

Thanks again guys. It was pretty neat seeing the way he took to it, and really cool seeing how excited he got when we walked over to it. We had to pry his hands off that thing when we went to move it for him!!!

thumb2: I'm glad you guys enjoyed the hunt, Limbshot!

Who field dressed it? Just curious, seems to always end up being my job when I take a nephew.

Good job Limbshot, Jr. It really says something about him that he can succeed in spite of having to hunt with you.

BB, I field dressed and processed him, but he was there observing all the way. He was pretty easy to process and will be quite tasty!

Rafe, yep he did good despite his handicap!!! :rotflmao: SMARTASS!

:rotflmao: You bastard! Well let's see, he killed a deer and found it the same day, so that rules out PS, he killed a deer, so that rules out Rafe and Hobie, my wife hates Triton boats so that rules out Triton, I think RB and BB are a little beyond my wife's age range (nothing personal guys) he doesn't have a "pot belly" so I guess that rules out 170, he is dang near a midget, so that rules out TT, he hates cutting firewood, so that rules out Dave, and he is a good looking kid, so that rules out you and Toby, so he must be mine!!!

BTW, he does enjoy telling that story and showing it off, I do no think there is a singel person he knows that has not seen pics of this deer!!! That is what it is all about!!!

When did I say I liked cutting firewood? That sir, is just a wild, ridiculous accusation.

OK, I asked her about you, and she said she remembers you. She wanted me to tell you that she was not spelling "R-U-N" she was asking "Are You In?" She just couldn't tell, that is all. :jmplgh:

That has to be the most well thought out response on this board in a long time.
