Who said anything about competing? I didn't. I have shot competitively however that is not the issue here, if you are going to hit a man at 500 yds use the .223, if you are after a prairedog or woodchuck DON'T.

BJ's post got this thread moved. I don't condone the taking of game without a valid tag and season. Hitting a man at 500 yrds. clearly breaks this well defined rule.

When I was in the Army, I shot in a Combat Pistol competition. Also at the range, were some fellas shooting in a Leg Match. These boys were usin their service M-16 and shootin well beyond 1000 meters... I'd say easily 1000 yards. Now granted, they had spotters with spotting scopes next to them... but DAMMM those were some shootin SOBs!

Not to get mired down in facts or anything, Hobie, but 1000 meters would be 1000 yards PLUS 3000 inches, which is 1083.33 yards.

Actually it's 1093.6132983377078 yards... but I was thinkin a meter was shorter than a yard.

Never-the-less, them boys wasa doin it... I seen'em.

You know how much it pains me to disagree with you Rafe, but I think you calculations may be a bit off. Isn't a meter actually 39.37 inches? That would make 1000 meters 1093.61 yards. Image

It's just easier to remember 3 ft. 3 inches. Trust me, I know it was a little more than that. I really don't want to intimidate a lot of the members of this board with too many decimals.

Hobiecat, question What was the size of the target they were shooting at? The smallest target we shot for 1000 meters was a 30IN. bull.

Granted, they were silohuette targets... but hittin one of'em at well over 1000 yards is impressive. Point is, there are competitions at over 1000yds with a round smaller than .264... as you know the 5.56mm used in an M-16 is a .223 round. 'Sides show me a man that can hit a prairiedog sized target at 1000 yards or more... I'll show you a freak accident.

"alright, this is the small game board. small game means varmints, and varmints mean long range shooting.

anyone want to try for the big one? a thousand-yard kill on your favorite varmint? yeah, i know that it would be a lot easier to have a 500yd or maybe even 750yd varmint club, but heck, we're the BSBs; certainly one or two of us could do it!

the rules are simple:

MEMBERS ONLY! (duh!)

1000 yards (or more), confirmed by at least 1 person who is there with you and willing (if necessary) to sign his/her name to the fact.
the kill must be made on or after 1 may 2005.

any species of small game including (but not limited to) gophers, rabbits, marmots, prairie dogs, coyotes, crows (why not?) kangaroos and any number of creatures i am sure i failed to mention. in wisconsin, cats will do, as long as it is truly a feral cat (if posters on streetcorners emerge asking you to help find little molly's cat, your entry is automatically disqualified).
any serious varminter probably has a range finder, but if not, use another method to measure the distance.
a picture must be posted including your name, the location (at least state and county), species of animal, distance, rifle, cartridge, load and bullet used, your witness and how many shots it took you to make the kill.
if the animal is what is traditionally known as a fur-bearer, it is suggested that you have the hide caped to commemorate the event.

the prize for making it into the club?

i am afraid that i am totally tapped for any money or prizes, but bragging rights are a given. also available is the fact that you will be known as a no-bullshit kind of varminter who has worked hard and achieved a huge milestone. i will also do whatever i can to spread the word about your achievement to a number of forums, and perhaps we can also contact a few magazines.

sound good?

i know that it's a pretty ambitious challenge, but it wouldn't be worth much otherwise. anyone who's got the guts to attempt this one and see it through deserves to be recognized. if you know any other varminters, refer them to this challenge and have them join BSB to get in on it.

while 1000yrds is the primary goal, we would also like to see pix and stories of some of the stepping stones up to this mark. please submit entries for 500yrds, 750yrds and 900yrds as well, and these will be displayed in order to show your progress!!

these rules and guidelines are a first-draft only, and i am sure that i left a few details out. i am not an experienced varminter, and doubt that i will be even trying out for this challenge any time soon. with that in mind, suggestions, ideas and comments on this proposal should be submitted on this thread. entries to the club can also be submitted on this thread. if any changes are made to the basic rules, they will be found here in this post. i will make them in bold print or make a notation at the bottom of this post describing the changes. i would like to have all amendments in place and a final version of the rules and guidelines by 1 may 2005.

alright! let's see some feedback on this and, hopefully, a few entries!"

1 mile is a "close range " that easy to shoot caliber with super sonic bullet at 1 mile

best easy respices in regular calibers are

300 Ultra with 220 SMK or 240 SMK ( better in the wind ) but 220 SMK works fine and are more easy to find
best is to use a match chambering with tighter dims as the broad REM factory

7 STW or 7/300 Weatherby with 168 or 180 custom bullet from Berger or JLK or Cautericio
162 AMAX can do the job but need to carefully check "bullet desintegration " in flight .

all in 28/30 inch barrel wich are not costly 32 or longer are nice but far more costly , first barrel ( beginner / trials ) can be in 28 inch / 30 inch and go after with a longer one

both of these two calibers are easy to fit on a REM action or a SAVAGE 110 action ( Remington fit method barrel with 1.25 shoulder diameter to allow steel around the chamber )

as real big cartridge you can play with 378 case or 416 case or even 338 LM IMP case but that not really necessary to reach 1 mile .

Looks to me like those guys tryin to get into that 1000yd club over there are doin alot of shootin, and not much hittin. Shoot enough, and you're bound to have an accident sooner or later.

There are guys with the right equipment (which costs ungodly amounts of money) that can shoot 5-6" groups at 1000yds.
