There are guys with the right equipment (which costs ungodly amounts of money) that can shoot 5-6" groups at 100yds.

Anyway, here's the point...

It takes as much luck as skill to pull off shot at 1000yds on something the size of a 20oz soda (prairie dog) or a basketball (ground hog). The fact is, most of us (if any) will never even take that shot on a varmint of any kind... matter of fact, 500 is prolly pushin it at best. That bein said, a .223 will fit the bill.

Oh heck Hobs, we've all shot at varmits, haven't we? I thought it was common stuff to splatter groundhog/crow/chipmunk/rabbit guts out in the field.

Yep, that's what I got too dave...a big fat red X.

Fug that .223 Hobie...I gots matching .280 and 22-250, stainless/composite and both are sweet shooters. I darn sure ain't shooting a 1000 yards at nothing, least of all something the size of a whistle pig. A few hundred yards on a damnned antelope was taxing enough for me! Image

OF,

Are you sure it was a few hundred yards ?

Word on the street is that you're delusional. Image

You ain't seen me deny that accusation yet, have you? Image But yeah, it was way the fornicate out there. I practiced at 200 yards (longest shot available at the local range) and I'd say it was close to double that. Long range shooting is fun if you do it all the time and got places to hunt, but I prefer bush to shave...uh, I mean open country. Image

davemo,
If you're going after coyote and fox both the .223 and .22-250 are good rounds. I'm not familiar with the .204 so can't help you out there. If "200-300 yds" is a long shot for you, I'd probably go .223, it'll do fine.
