By that logic, you would buy a big Weatherby Cartridge without batting an eye...
The fact is I know Keith and his perspective on hunting and how he's going to go about it. The advice was given on that basis.
There is getting by with the average and going all in. Bows, guns, or anything else for that matter.
You can wack a deer pretty easy. They are a wimpy critter. But, you might as well add some sport to it and use cool chit to do it with.

Oh, and on a side note, I will load you one .270 round just like you asked... and I'll give it to you for free...

I have no fornicating idea what you are talking about Toby. What I do want to know is whether or not you are going to kill a big bastard buck with your setup? If all of that chronographing, KE calculating chit enables you to kill better deer, then I may follow your lead.

I bet you would...wouldn't expect anything different from a guy like you. It's a shame you can't.
Poison...I think it was Dave who said, "the hardest thing about killing a big buck is having one to hunt." I am hunting some new ground this year so you never know...put me in your stand and you can find out first hand.

Smitty,
You should see this baby with the new Vortex scope. It's almost too pretty to shoot.

Keith said he didn't have time for the range work to set up that special load. Hence the advice.
I'm using 105 gr. Berger VLD's over IMR-7828ssc in Laupa brass with CCI BR-2 primers.
But that's just me.

Jeeze SF, that handload costs more than the Noslers that are delivered right to your door.

Maybe, never did the math.
This load will brain-pan a deer at 300yds.

Now that is putting some sport into it.

I've been trying to get drawn for Whetstone Creek for years.
Gotta kill a doe before I go after a buck. I'm not going to play any silly games when it comes to whackin a doe. I see it, I kill it. Then its into the brush with the 30-30 and the previously mentioned Winchester 170 gr. Silver Tip ammo.

It pisses me off to have to agree with MoCraig but in real life, if you don't have a rifle/shooter that can get the milage from it, premium ammo is a waste of money.

The more deer I shoot, and see others shoot, the more I think caliber choice is less critical than ammo choice. Bullets can funtion very differently these days, and if you have a specific need or desire, you can use the bullet that can make that happen. But really, hitting a deer right is more important than either.
If you hit them right, they're going to die quick enough whether you're using a hard premium built for extreme penetration, or a soft bullet that is designed not to exit. Put it in the ribs or neck, and it's all over.

Regardless of TTN's post, there are very real-world reasons to switch to a bow like an Xforce or an Iron Mace. To argue against them is kind of foolish, and only to prove a petty point.
I'm not so sure that I agree with this. Can you ellaborate? I do like the idea of one pin out to 40 yards, but other than that, I see absolutely no reason to make the switch to either of these bows. Most one pin shooters are getting 30 yards out of their set-ups these days and considering that most shots on deer are within 25 yards, that is sufficient. Speed and kinetic energy will not make you kill more or better deer. Having a good place to hunt deer and being able to outsmart them will. That being said, I also see no reason to shoot high-dollar shells.
BTW, how much did that deer in your avatar weigh approximately?

Dave is spot on.
Mocraig, would you recommend someone not use a premium broadhead. Same principle. Ever minor advantage counts. Personal choice plays the biggest factor. You choose to be a tool. I choose to be cool.

I've never thought about rifles and loads in the way I'm reading here. Can someone give me an example where this advice would pay off? For example, my M700 Mountain Rifle puts 3 dirty Remington 140-grain Core-Lokt's into less than an inch at 100-yards.
Not to mention a copper fowled barrel.
Knowing you and how/where you hunt it wouldn?t make sense for you to change. Whether it be premium bullets, reloading or custom gun modifications, unless you were hunting bigger game, shoot at distances that exceed the accuracy of your factory load, shooting excessively where cost becomes a factor or suddenly come down with an obsessive compulsive disorder and a need to tinker?like me?it doesn?t benefit, 16yrs of experience and a photo album full of pictures is proof of that.
