Personal choice plays the biggest factor.
I think it boils down to this.
Different points of view...what means the most to you...what justifiable effort will most likely result in success...most importantly, what makes you most confident?etc... To me...choosing a "big Weatherby? doesn't make sense...more powder, bigger bullets, bigger ?bang? with more recoil. I personally can't justify it. I do not believe it will even slightly better my chances of killing a midwestern whitetail vs. my good old 30-06 with a Rem Core-Lokt.
On the other hand?IMO?a 40% increase in point blank range and kinetic energy while utilizing a shorter draw length, equal draw weight, equal brace height, equal effective let-off and the same arrow is huge. I undoubtedly believe this setup will expand the proverbial ?boundaries? of archery equipment.

Explain how that last paragraph is going to better your chances of killing a midwestern whitetail. I agree that it is cutting-edge archery technology on the other hand.

Re: Gun hunters..suggestions wanted
The hardest part about bow killing a deer has nothing to do with whether the mofo is standing at 30yds or 40yds. It has to do with getting that close or closer to begin with, and keeping your composure to make the right decisions at crunch time.
By todays standards, some pretty chitty equipment has been used to make good, long bow shots.
Also it doesn't matter if your bow has one pin or 9 pins, if you never see the deer, or mentally fall apart when you do have a chance, you're still forked. Not that I think the regulars here fall into that category....anymore.
That's the point I think Snakely is trying to make. I agree. I've killed some deer with a bow that didn't shoot over 190fps on its best day, and used that sombich until it was at least 12yrs old. Equipment makes up a small part of overall success. It does make up a part though. When equipment goes wrong though, it will completey rip your azs out.

It only betters your confidence. And that's an okay route to take. And sometimes it's just about having cool stuff.
Since the beginning of mans quest for food, there has always been the fascination of better equipment. The magic bullet, hook or broadhead. It's human nature. It's just where you put your emphasis since much of today's pursuit is mixed with hobby not sheer sustenance.

I know that's why I have all of the guns and equipment I have TTN, to have cool chit. I could sell every gun I have, and get a marlin .22,savage 30-06, and 870 12g, and never miss a hunting opportunity. I like me some oddball chit though.

PS, sorry for butting-in, but IMO if you spend much time watching the Outdoor Channel you`ll get the answer to your question. There are guys on there killing deer at 40 yards like it`s nothing. Ten years ago bows were so slow, and noisy, that a deer, at 40 yards, would be gone before the arrow got to it. Modern archery has increased the effective range, if only a few yards, of all but the most inept of archers. (don`t take this personal MOCraig)

2Tall and Dave have nailed it. It's all about having cool chit. I'm as guilty as anyone on that one. Especially now that I have a handy-dandy range finder.
170, let's not get the term archer confused with hunter. I have already made that mistake. By definition, you more than likely fit into both categories. Me, on the other hand, only one, and that is on a good day. I'm not sure those fukers on the OC fit into either on any given day. There are a select few that are worth a chit, but there are some real dandies on there.
In years past, I have always had quality equipment with respect to bowhunting. The more $ I make, the more I wish to have better chit. Not that it will make me kill more deer or better deer. There are 3 or 4 bow companies that I will consider when buying my next bow. In fact, I believe I have narrowed it to two (Bowtech and ROSS). I'm not so concerned about the dynamics of the bow, but moreso the fact that it is a quality product that I can trust. But, the coo chit factor will come into play. For example, I'm seriously considering one of those dipping jobs on my next rig for certain. Would never need such a thing to kill deer, but it just looks cool.

I can't say I can take a stand against anyones point of view here. It's all the above...It's performance gains...personal choices...confidence...and most definatley cool chit. For me... I got to add personal limits.
PS...Like you said...averages say deer are killed within 25yds and I agree.
It seams like forever and a day I have been shooting a "speed" bow and 1-pin setup because of my belief to this statement. I have/had 1 pin set at 27 yards...this allowed me a point blank range of about 31 yards...hitting approximately a 3? at all ranges in between. With less of a concern for noise and vibration I wanted to make those last steps before releasing the arrow as ?fool proof? as possible, i.e. you can't fork up one pin. Even though I have an adjustable one pin sight, I have it marked out to 40yds and readily practiced to 40+ yds...the one pin location is my personal limit on the stand. I have/will readily pass on deer at 35+ yds. Luckily, for me...none of these deer have been monsters. My limit would have definitely been challenged with a shooter @ 40yds.
Until now I could not justify the money spent for the ?real world? performance gains the market was delivering. Not to say I didn?t have choices and I didn?t consider them. Upon review most of these choices came with shorter brace heights, higher draw weights or lighter arrows. The bows that were equal in spec just didn?t have what I could justify as a significant advantage.
My X-Force is currently set-up utilizing a slightly shorter draw length, equal draw weight, equal brace height, equal effective let-off and (relatively speaking) the same arrow and has extended my personal 1-pin limit by about 10yds. Not to mention the bow is lighter, has less vibration and is quieter. An objective spec...it?s ?shoot ability?. It?s phenomenal when compared to my old bow.
Oh yeah...it's also cool.
Anyway...you boys have fun contesting who can piss the farthest....I'm outta here for the weekend. Floating the current this weekend with about 15 others...gonna get drunker than piss and undoubtedly test some of those new rules OF is always bitching about.

On the subject of rifles...there is a show on TV called "Best of the West". These guys load their own ammo, and build their own rifles. They regularly shoot targets out to 1000 yards. On a pronghorn hunt, instead of getting as close as they could to the goats, they purposely wanted to be 600-700 yards away. I doubt that store bought ammo would work for these guys.

Toby: I too have an adjustable one pin sight. It is set for 30 yards. But, I never move that pin once it is set. I can see that costing me a deer in the long run moreso than it would help me. I just compensate by aiming high or low. A big deer at 40 yards will get whacked for sure. Again, I like the idea of a single pin out to 40 yards but it won't change matters much for me. For you, it does sound as if it will extend your range and your confidence a great deal. Sounds good.
If you can now teach Craig how to kill decent deer, you two can start a company and call it Aim Dead-on.

@ PS170-I have seen the show. Coyote kill at 1070yds or some chit. Everything they use is custom. If you've ever shot a deer past 350yds, you'll begin to wonder if that is hunting, or if that is taking advantage. I have, and I can, but I don't really care to, unless that deer is one that demands my attention. Shooting that far is better left for gongs and targets, imo.

I had an opportunity a few years back to shoot a 50 caliber BMG rifle- I highly recommend one if you want a cool toy that can destroy things at long distance. It's not all that cheap to shoot regularly though.

Yeah, neither is 30-378 ammo.
