I've checked on a cheapo cabela's scale, and that around the chest measurement chart was within a couple pounds. I figure its good enough.

Another thing I've heard, is that if you weigh the edible meat, (about every scrap you can get) it should weigh 40% of live weight.

There was some show on the OC or MOR the other day. These guys were hunting elk with a 50 caliber. To me thats just ridiculous. The thing looked like a bazooka when he hung it over his back, and the shells looked like something out of a Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Image

I know the deer looks like a pig. What is the guestemated FD weight Dave? Isn't it something like 75-80% of the live weight?

Yes.

The biggest deer I've ever seen I guessed at 270lb or so field dressed, shot up in Kirskville. That may not be reliable because I've never seen a deer that big. It was easily 18" across the shoulders though, and had the thickest neck I've ever seen. It could have been heavier than that.

Dave: The IL deer I killed FD 225 on one scale and 250 on another. I think closer to 225 was more realistic. It truly was a big deer. The big 8 pointer FD 205. I was thinking Craig's deer was around 200 based upon the picture. I don't think I have ever seen a bigger deer on the hoof other than that IL deer. Well, maybe one. Keith@aimlow and I saw an absolutely huge-bodied deer last fall. It had a big rack to match.

You're a clumsy bastard. Maybe you should change your screenname to Toxic Snake or Posion Reptile or such.

I know Craig posted that. I was suggesting that maybe a name change was appropriate because of his clumsy antics.

Now, had he said that he put the deer over his shoulder and jumped up into the truck, as agile as a panther... then I would have suggested he change his name to MoCat or some such.

Oh, OK. My mishaps aren't a result of clumsiness. Moreso foolishness.

I thought you said 248 field dressed.

Loading a limp asz big deer is a hard sombitch. A good technique is to tie his head up as high as you can get it on the truck tailgate, and then swing his back legs in.

I hurt my back on the last buck I loaded, and he was only 200lb or so field dressed. I ended up using a pulley to get him off the ground and backed up to him. Pussi move if I do say so myself.

Hard to tell from pics. He looks bulkier in the avatar pic. Still qualifies for a big deer though, imo.

That big one I saw in Kirksville was a pig. It had a 9pt 130-135 gross class rack, 17" wide, that looked like little bitty twigs sticking out of his head. Its shoulders were wider than its rack.

I have no solid measurements or anything but guesses on my two biggest bucks. I wish I did though.

You need to get a block and tackle, and a scale. I could sell you exactly that, lightly used, at some awesome rates.

I said at most. Maybe if you were holing it up better, like TTN does, I could get the full grasp at how small the deer that you shoot are.

When I'm getting meat for me, that is exactly the type of does I like to shoot too.

Get a cheap / used sheet of 5/8, or 3/4 plywood, and put it in the bed of your truck.

Drag the dead goat close to your open tailgate, and slide out the plywood to make a ramp. Drag the deer partially on to the plywood while standing on the ground. Let go, and it won't slide backwards.

Hop up into the bed, and pull the deer closer to the top of the plywood. Agian, let go, it won't slide.

Then, hop back to ground level, lift the lower end of the plywood, and slide the whole works into the bed. You never have to lift the entire wight of the deer at once. Image Image

I've done this with 200 lb. + bucks. Image
