Urban deer

Would you hunt deer inside city limits? What method would you prefer? Would you hunt deer in city limits if it was against city ordinaces to shoot either guns or "razor tipped arrows" eventhough the state has set up urban hunting seasons, and special limits, including firearms during the Oct Urban deer seaon?

I have tons of deer in my yard often, I could shoot them out of the window, if I would allow myself to do it (I haven't). I talked with a neighbor last night who claims to have bow killed two b&c bucks in years past and recovered a b&c roadkill last year. Across the road from my house last night there were 15 deer in a pasture, there have been as many as 21 in the last few days. Deer are hit infront of my house often, 6-7+ per year that don't make it out of the ditches.

Would you try to eliminate some of these urban deer? even if does only?

If the city allows it I would.

Heck ya. If I had access like that, yes. I'm just that kind of guy. However, I would not feel the acomplishment I get out of patterning, changing/moving stands, and taking deer in open country.

I would if it did not break city ordinances. I would get every bit as much pride from an urban buck as a "open country" buck (whatever that means). Anyone that thinks a big urban buck (or mature doe for that matter) is a pushover, hasn't hunted them. Any deer that has avoided cars, dogs, poachers, and people in close proximity has lived a life full of lessons.

If it was against city ordinance, I wouldn't. Otherwise, I would and do.

You fella's don't understand, it is against city ordinances to fire a gun or shoot a razor tipped arrow.

I talked for a while with a conservation agent about the legallities of hunting in city limits. His stance was that the state had no problems as long as legal hunting methods were used. He also said that a city cop would have to catch me actually shooting a broadhead for him to be able to write me a ticket.

The landownder right across the street has been bow hunting for several years. After I told him about the urban gun season in Oct., he seemed interested in geting rid of some does, with guns.

Would you still pursue this opportunity?

btw-I'm in the south east corner of KC, there are horse pastures, woodlots, woody creek drainages, and working farms around where I live, inside city limits. I live on 3 acre, and its the small place, some chunks of land are over 80acres.

Last night when I pulled in the driveway there were 26 hen turkys in the yard, across the road, 5 deer in the pasture. Such is life in south KC, the deer feed by the light of the street lights around here.

I know of a few guys that hunt Swope Park, and kill big bucks, but I don't like messing with the law, eventually ya' get caught.

Killing does within the city limits is a joke. IMHO, you should kill every 170" deer that walks by your house, ordinance or no ordinance.

It is a minor offense, I don't know if the ticket would run over $100. Somebody at the city need to do something/allow something because the deer are a road hazard, way too many.

Well, you might get the thoughts of your neighbors adjacent to your property. If they are fine with it, whack away. That is my advice. But, you don't want to get some anti- that might do you in if a deer dies on their property.

The guy owns a bow shop in Garden City, and makes the drive into KC to hunt Swope park. I guess the hunting is that good.

PS- The neighbor across the road shoots skunks and vermin with a 12g a couple time a week. Nobody cares, not even the retired cop that is my neighbor to the north. Hell, if I need to check the sights on my .22 rimfire, I do in the yard, its no big deal with the neighbors.

dave-t, if it's a problem... why don't you try and get a petition together and approach the city council about it?

Well, you have already answered your question then. If everyone and their grandma is hunting or shooting, I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit idly by while a B&C walks by my back window. I'm gonna fling one at him. Image

Hobie- The city is part of the problem. If there was an organized group of hunters that would approach the city council, I would join them. I don't beleive Kay Barnes, the mayor, would here anything about it. Too many other more important problems to deal with, to waste time with wild animal road hazards. Besides, they made the razor tipped arrow ordinance for a reason. Those Bastards!

PS- I have seen 150+ net bucks chasing does in my backyard and running across the streets. I have seen so many pushing matches between marginal bucks in my yard, I don't even watch anymore unless they are decent bucks (110"+). I have had 63 turkeys in my yard twice. Its some pretty weird city livin' around here.

Shoot them with field points.
