How big was it?

Caught a largemouth, early January at Bull Shoals. Length was 23-1/4", with a big pot belly. My biggest bass to date. I'm a walleye fisherman, probably not real good at figuring bass weight, so I just guesstimated about 7 lbs. and set her free. What do you think--high, low, or pretty close? Thanks...

Your going to be a little low would be my guess......
Nice Fish for sure----
(length x length x girth) / 1,200====I'm guessing but I'd say just a tad over 8...

According to my expert calculations, that fish weighed 8.35678 pounds. Nice catch!
I showed a few how to
estimate weights though....Tried to get a Guy to go 100.00 on who could do the
best ....NOBODY beats me....hehehe ....NOBODY..

DSG, you're incorrigible, but I do respect your general opinion on the fish...thanks.

powerdive.........that really was a nice fish!
As for the rest? It is just a parody (using a direct quote) of something your pal said........and nobody (I should say; none of the clique,) said a word to him about how ignorant it sounded.

DSG, that's your game, not mine. I'm just here for the fishing. Gotta wade a bit to get to it, I guess. Personalities aside, we've all got the love of the outdoors in us, so it's never hopeless.
A couple people had hinted that I might have underestimated the weight of that fish. Ain't got too many of those back in Wisconsin, ya know. Even tho I was fishing for walleyes at the time, it was a memorable catch. Anyway, I appreciate any feedback.
Pman, thanks, but unfortunately I didn't get a girth measurement...

pd-- here's my 2 cents... I've got one on the wall thats a red pube short of 24". Caught it on TR in late July. After 8 hrs in the livewell, it went 6lb 8oz. It didn't have the pot gut, but I still think it would've went over 7lb right out of the water. I'd say your's was at least 7.5 or bigger
Nice fish regardless

powerdive, I'm good with that, my response was basicly in response to some of the chit I have caught from some of the "clique" that has been unwarranted. You made your point, I'm done with that with regard to you. Moving on.
THaus makes a good point. It really depends on the fish, I caught one that was 24" a few years back in July that looked like it weighed 10 when it was caught, due to the flesh being really soft in the hot water (I guess,) it only weighed 7lb 14oz on a tournament scale.
On the other hand, the fish in my avatar wasn't that looooooong but it was caught the first of May and it's toad factor was REALLY high. When I say toad factor I mean it. Caught the toad off a bed and didn't wanna move her so we put her right back. Didn't have a tape or scale but we figured the fish to go well, and possibly WELL over 10. It was nearly as wide as it was long. BTW, that estimate wasn't made by me, it was made by a guy that lives on LofO and has caught more 9-10lb fish than I have ever even seen.
The whole point being, THaus is right. Your fish coulda weighed anything, but my bet is it was over 8 since it was Jan.

A bass will weigh considerably more in the spring before it spawns than in June or July.....

Triton, you are right. This is only a theory, but I think it has as much to do with the fact that they are flabby in the summer as much as it does the fact that they aren't carrying eggs. Whadda'ya think?

A couple yrs ago on Stockton, we had a small company tourney in late March and a guy weighed in a 8+lb black that was only 21" long. It looked alot like DSG's fish, "boxcar" bass. Thick side to side and thick top to bottom. You could have almost laid a beer can across it's shoulders. Mine is slender and didn't have much thickness at all, just long. Almost looks like a big male..

I wish now that we could have weighed it sooner and to be honest, we weighed it on some gas station scales as we were heading home. I didn't care what it weighed back then. I was just darn proud. It was prolly my 4th "real" trip bass fishing.
I agree, I think the fish are much more lighter in the summer, with fighting the hot water, post spawn, etc.
Triton, did you get some pics of the hawg today?? That woulda been a good start on a helluva sack...

Congrats..

Yeah, I have some pics, but I ruined my usb cable to the camera a while back and I cant get them onto the puter....My fish was short and stocky and like you said about 21 1/2 inches long but man what shoulders....I think the reason the fish weigh more during the prespawn is that they do have a lot more eggs and such during this time and the water is cooler...During the summer the metabolism is a lot higher and they do lose some....I have seen almost 24 inch bass not weigh much more than 5 or 6 pounds during the summer and early fall.....FWIW

Oh I forgot to add I wished it had been caught in a BFL tournament next month at LofO....
