Wallpapering

Mrs. Hollister is moving the shop to a new location. We're trying to decide on a design.

Option #1: We will be putting up new wallpaper to about 3 ft. high and capping it with chair rail on top and installing a decorative baseboard at the bottom.
Pros:
1. It will look very nice done this way.
Cons:
1. Neither one of us has ever wallpapered before.
2. Uneven walls may be accentuated by the wallpaper design.
3. Walls are not uniform, with window sills, old trim, etc., so the wallpaper pattern will be difficult to keep together in some places.

Option #2: Put up new border trim, with contrasting paint colors above & below.

Pros:
1. Faster & easier.
2. Cheaper
3. Don't have to worry about maintaining the pattern over uneven walls.

Cons:
1. Won't look as good as Option #1.

This will be going over some very old sheetrock. We're moving to a 3 story brick building on Main Street that is over 100 years old.

LA, what do you think is the best course of action for us?

Option 3 Wainscot sheets are fairly forgiving and even you could install them and cap with a nice chair rail.

Unless it is your property I would do option 2

Rafe~ Option #1 is a ton of work. Wallpapering is not at all my idea of a good time. True, the look you are describing, is very popular and can look great. Condition of the sheet rock is a factor... bumpy, cracking, uneven etc... wallpaper can help cover these without excessive spackle. But matching the pattern is essential which can be very time consuming.

So, long and the short of it, I would choose option 2, if the sheet rock is decent/paintable. Depending on the light, I would choose a rich color with a complimenting tasteful border. I don't think I would go beige/tan in a floral shop... choose something richer. I wish you great luck and even more patience.

Stop! Collaborate and listen.
Ice is back with a brand new invention.
Something grabs a hold of me tightly,
Flow like a hawk, both daily and nightly.
Will it ever stop, yo?
I don't know.
Turn off the lights, and I'll glow.
To the extreme, I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up the stage, and wax a punk like a candal.

Hobie,

It's Main St. Webb City. BTW, since you're gonna be in town on moving day, maybe you can help us move.
