Humble Pie

Saturday, November 12. I got myself set up at 6am looking at a ridge. ?About 8am, a group of 7 or 8 does and yearlings walk casually along side the ridge stopping here and there for a bite. I take aim at one of the mature does, 60 yards shot and fire ?Nothing! The noise got their attention, but they still continue all casual like. I load and fire again ?Nothing! This time the noise spooked them, the mature does trot up a little and stop, still less than 100 yards. I load and fire again ?Nothing. With that, the mature does break for cover with no sign of injury. There were 3 or 4 fawns still on the ridge so I take aim at one of them and fire ?nothing! WTF!!! Then, the fawn I aimed at walks down the ridge and starts grazing not more than 25 yards from me. I can not fornicating believe it, I reach to my pack to grab another bullet, no more fornicating bullets.
I called it and spent the rest of Saturday target practicing. I just could not believe I missed that many times, I?m better than that. That kinda chit is sloppy and I darn well know it. Initially I blamed the scope, thinking that I had bumped it off on the walk into the woods. However, the scope was accurate when I was target practicing.
Sunday, I go out to the same ridge. 1 hour into it, the same group walks out on the ridge. I get up, take a deep breath, told myself to take my time and I put the crosshairs on another 60 yard shot. I had beaten myself up for the past 24 hours, now and I am gonna do this right? I miss. I reload, I miss again. The group scattered, the doe I was aiming at trots back up the ridge and stops at an angle that would be unsafe to shoot. I put that doe in the crosshairs to watch for any sign of injury. With her donkey filling the circle of my scope, she drops some chit, fans her donkey and walks out of view.
I feel like crap. I thought I was better than that kinda chit.
