Deformed Rack

If a buck has some kind of trauma that affects one side of his rack, will that deformity happen each year from then on? My wife shot a buck this year that has one good side and the other is messed up. Just curious if she passed on him if he would have been symetrical next year.

If the injury is to the pedicle then that side will always be non-typ. If the damage is to some part of the bucks body, then usually the opposite side horn will show odd growth, but can go back to normal.

By pedicle are you referring to the base of the antler? The deformity on this buck starts at the base of the right antler so if that's what you're referring to then I guess it wouldn't have mattered to let him go another year.

It's the boney protrusion where the antler grows from the skull.

B&D: Chances are your buck would have been deformed next year as well. On the deer I killed last year, the pedicle was noticibly smaller on the left side as compared to the right. That side was 10" smaller than the right side. Still a good buck, but I would like to have had that additional 20" on the final score.

So the right side shines ahead, but the left side shines on her foot? Image
