This forum is pretty dead for being the second day of Missouri turkey season.

1" spurs, 9.75" beard, my heaviest turk, at just around 26lbs. I was holding the scale, so it might not have been 100% accurate, maybe 25.75lbs or so, but still a whopper.

Now we are talking! Was this a yard bird?

Got me one yesterday at 6:40. Not a big one but it will taste good. 17# 1-6 inch beard 1- 2 inch beard, 3/4 inch spurs. When I got out there I had to decide which bird to go after. I heard about 7 different bird all in different locations so I decided to setup in between two of them. Finally the one bird started working my way so I stayed with him. He popped his head up above the creek bank and I shot him in the face. When I got up to get over to him he had a buddy with him that ran off. Whats good is there are still a bunch out there.

I'm ashamed to say it was the yard bird (one of them).

I was at a doc appointment with LA yesterday morning, and missed openning day. I decided to take the .410 into the woods before work and give it a shot. Came in alone, to about 14yds and caught some #4 in the head. I'd been watching this thing for 2 months (as you guys know) so it wasn't a big feat to kill him. I just sat on the trail that led to my backyard. Image

This is my busiest time of year at work and it's hard to get time off in spring. I hadn't killed a bird in 2 years, and only got to hunt 3 part days total in that time. It was more than I could stand to just let him live, when I've been whatching these things in the yard and not taking them for years. I don't even think this was the boss tom. I have seen two others with thicker beards and longer spurs. But, as it was, I was almost late for work, so I wasn't going to be picky.

Kinda pitiful imo, but after years of not getting any turks, just to see them in the yard gobbling/strutting etc through the whole season, I took it out on this one. Image

Heck, I might even do it again. Saves on gas money and all. Image

Dave, I'm hear to tell you, yard bird or not... I would bring searing hot lead to that dudes head and not think twice about it. I look at it this way... you have two more to wack that live there. One more for you year and one for LA. There will be more next year.

If LA could sit still for 45 seconds, we might be able to get her one.

One of those toms has 1.5" or better spurs, just huge needles. I'd like to whack that sucker.

When we got home from the doc appointment, there were 6 jakes in the yard. Lotsa turks.

Whack em and stack em Dave. Give LA a jar full of pickles. Maybe that will keep her still long enough.

Good goin Roscoe.

Come Friday I hope to be letting some lead fly.

I will add however that them city turks are much easier to kill than them open country turks. Image Image Image

I will agree with that. Nothing after them but the bobcats in the city. Gobblin' sumbiches too.
