We fished Kinkaid lake yesterday. Probably the best morning ever as far as crappie are concerned. My question is; Why where most of the fish we caught slab females? Most still had egg sacks in them. They were caught in 4 ft water on the edge of a grass line. There were lots of fry in the grass that were not in the fishes gut. Do you think they were protecting fry or feeding? Maybe both?

Crappie seldom spawn all the eggs, many are reabsorbed back into their system. You might finds eggs in their system anytime during the year, even the fall. Crappie follow the small bait fish, thus those in the grass. my two cents.

Thanks for the answer Bruce, I caught some last week with eggs, and was wondering the same thing. I've sen them with eggs in the fall and just thought they were getting started early for the spring.
