Friend of a friend took this buck the first Sunday, at 11:45 in the rain.

Well...if you want to see it, I guess go to AT and have a look. Green score was 189+, velvet.

That is cool. I actually like the early season hunting. Most of my success has been in early october before the lull. I am suprised by the velvet though. Image

I never have figured out those who wait. Sure, I prefer hunting the peak of the rut, but I'd still rather be sitting in a tree then sitting on the couch.

I understand those who don't want to disturb their prime spots early in the year, but why not just hunt somewhere else? This time of the year, I will often set my stand somewhere where I can see for a mile, and just spend the time glassing for em. Even if I don't get any shots off, you can learn a lot about where they are moving.

The thing I like most about this time of the year is that I can leave work at 5, and be in my treestand before 6pm. Gives me almost two hours to hunt.

That is unusual for a big one to still be in velvet. The older bucks tend to shed velvet first.

Bugs, heat, meat spoilage, and shot blocking thick foliage. That's why I prefer to wait until the bucks are spending a bigger part of their day on their feet during pre-rut. Every place is different though, and if I had a good bean or alfalfa field that was getting hit hard, I'd be on it, or even enough land that educating the deer on one property wouldn't fork up the other places.

Still, you get more buck travel in late Oct and Nov, along with better response to calls, scents, more exciting hunting action, etc.

Also, the most reliable feed pattern for deer is long after the gun season. Image

JD brings up a good point which seldom happens but none the less. Scouting from a location as he has suggested for patterning purposes is an awesome tactic this time of year. If you are hunting an area that you already have figured out for the most part ( bedding, food, typical routes to and fro ) this is the time to see what might be waiting for you. Additionally you can still catch bachelor groups hanging together.

Dave, quit your whining Image excuses and get out there. You wont fork it up unless you don't know what your doing.

Speaking of scouting locations...this guy saw the deer twice from his bowfishing boat, coming down to get a drink at the same spot, about same time of day. Moved in and made it happen.

Also, I may seem nonchalant about a deer's senses, the sense of smell especially, but I don't give the suckers any extra chances to bust me, just because I want to be outside.

The wind has to be right, the pattern known, bedding area known, etc. and even then I want something extra tipping the scales in my favor, like cooler than average temps, hunting just after a rain, or knowing that rutting activity is taking place, etc., before I go out and risk hunting a prime spot that a good buck is using.

Still, having all these variables doesn`t mean the deer will show. Having none of these variables doesn`t mean that he won`t.

From the last week in October, until season is over, I pretty much hunt whenever I can, and wherever the wind is favorable.

Me too, 170. All of that doesn't mean he'll show, but it shifts the odds closer to my favor, than hunting at this time of year, imo. I really almost insist on at least 2 or more factors giving me better odds before I hunt, unless it's the rut, or the last week of bow season. I don't go sit in a good stand just because I want to be outside. That's what small game hunting is for, dickin' around outdoors with guns. Image

This guy is a friend of a friend. I am sure he would appreciate the sentiment though.

You mean to tell me you have someone that actually considers you to be a friend?
