Deer Survey

Post by RB » January 29th, 2007, 2:28 pm

How many of you received the deer survey from MDC? I got one and sent it back. One group of questions had to do with a proposed package of regulations that would move the antlerless season to October, start rifle season a week later so it runs through thanksgiving and move muzzle loader further out in December. Not that any of you have ever been shy with opinions but what do you all think of these proposed changes?

I received one but have not sent it back. Personally, I think that we should have year round seasons like spear, sling shot and truck season just to name a few that way I wouldn't have to kill so many in 3 months of the year.

In reality I think that they should move antlerless back to January, move rifle to the beginning of December and possibly move muzzle loader up a few weeks.

Free oral with purchase of every deer tag. That's all I care about.

fishin, from the questions on the survey they are going in a direction that many of us would not like. I think their continuing emphasis is on population control and hunting opportunities for the most people they can get out in the woods. The 4pt rule is a flag wave at qdm.

I think you're right there rainbow. I honestly think if anything, they will just keep adding to the gun season, as more hunters have a chance as being successful. It'll be a cold day in Hades before MO has a gun season out of the rut. No matter how good it would be for the states trophy potential. Image

RB,

I guess that is why I have not wasted my time filling it out I really don't think that the MDC gives a rats butt about what we generally think. I am not a big QDM fan but I am more than willing to shoot does instead of 6 point bucks at this point.

In all sincerity I think that 4 point rule is going to be a pan flash because there is no way that MDC is going to move the gun season out of the rut and but I doubt they will make it much longer if they lengthen it at all. I think that they will continue to length what they see as opportunities to hunt such as Archery and muzzle loader season to make more and more people feel like the have the chance to hunt.

The trophy potential in this state is really good but it is not going to happen anytime soon because it is not fiscally responsible.

fishin, by not filling out the survey you have lost a chance to put one more voice on record against what they are doing. If you don't send it back they can say it probably doesn't matter to us because X% of the hunters don't send them back. I we send them back and disagree at least they know we are out here. it only takes a couple of minutes so do it for the team.

PS, unfortunately it does not look that way from the questions on the survey. The direction appears to be more does killed and more hunting opportunities in weekend warrior weather. If you are looking for the kind of direction you state you will probably have to look elsewhere and that is too bad.

RB: I recognize this for sure. Funny thing is that I know many within the ranks of the MDC that would love to see changes such as these occur as well. Furthermore, they are getting somewhat frustrated with the focus on killing does. But, according to them, the decisions come straight from the director's desk and not from the resource scientists in Columbia. I mentioned this a month back that the only way to change things was to twist the arm of the legislature. Since that isn't going to happen, I'm with Fishin on this. All of these surveys are going to fall on deaf ears.

Wouldn't killing does be easier in the early and late season. In my experience they don't move near as well on their own, and aren't as paternable during the rut as they are early in the fall, and when it gets cold.

I don't really care though. I don't think it's too easy to kill a nice buck with a gun. Chit, I've killed more bucks with a bow. Gun hunting has it's own charisma about it, and I'll be hunting both gun and bow, whatever the seasons dates are.

PS, I am afraid you are right on this one. Since the commission is "non-political" don't look for any help from the legislature. I guess we will just keep whacking deer, making sausage and jerky and steaks on the grill.

Yes they do move better earlier or later in the season, so I'm not so diappointed with an early doe season. I'm moreso upset that they intend to keep it because by mid-December I'm sick of the banging. I'd be happy if it were implemented every 3 years or so. They recently moved it out of January becaue of the number of antlerless bucks being killed. I cannot remember right off hand the exact percentages that were antlerless, but is was enough to make them move the season back a month. Maybe they will have it to coincide with this darn urban season they now have in October.

City regs keep that from being worth a chit. Where they need to does killed, you can't gun hunt them anyway. Some of the situations MDC puts out are just asinine.

Where I lived in KC, they could have had a one week Oct urban gun season, and still need more does killed. But, at the same time, you can't just let any yahoo tromp around in the city with a highpower.

They should have just called me, I'd have told 'em straight.
