Well, for the first time in a long time... I got poison ivy mushroom hunting last weekend. On my hands and wrists... for the first time ever. I wanna know everyone's cure. It's so very annoying. Not to mention I worked yesterday and come in all my grossness to lay hands on cancer patients. How would you like that? "Hello, me with the nasty chit on my hands, yep... I'm your nurse today."

My brother-in-law dries it out by rubbing the blisters with kerosene. He figures if it hurts like a sumbich, it must be working. Then again, he's got the intelligence of the rest of his family.

Rafe: A chick at work said bleach. I looked at her like she said rub some chit on it. I have been cleaning all morning. I'm hoping Comet and Scrubbing Bubbles will do the trick.
I do have a steroid shot... that would work, but it has to go intramuscular and Dave sure as helll isn't gonna do it.
Craig~ I've tried root oil before. It never worked. It will cure strep throat though. Sell the wifey on that one.

Old Spice after shave.
edit: Given the posts up above about you and Dave's "antics" in th woods....just what kind of "mushroom" was you looking for when you got this poison ivy?

I have been health director at a Boy Scout camp for several years. The irritant is carried in an oil. First of all make sure you are rid of the oil that carries the irritant. Dawn dish soap is exellent, or you can use a shampoo. Make sure that you put concentrated soap on the area. Next make sure it does not itch or get infected by your scratching it. Use a first aid spray with and anesthedic. Cover it with a clean dry dressing. An antihistamine like Benedryl either topical or systemic, or both also helps it to heal faster. Lastly you wont believe it but Ibuprofen will also help it heal faster by helping to reduce inflamation, and to reduce the itch.-- paddle

Im impressed Dr. Paddle. It is not what I have grown accustomed to seeing from the posts of the GWH and such.
Personally, LA, I would go with the bleach...If it doesnt kill you it will only make you stronger.

Morels. One must have been surrounded. That is the only explanation for me not seeing the ivy. I must have been in a trans.
Paddle, thanks for the advice. I have been doing all you have mentioned with the exception of covering it. I keep it open to air so it will dry out sooner. I've had it a few days already. Looks like the boy scouts will be safe.

Could that be a "trance" you are speaking of?

LA, first you are lucky it is only on your hands....poison ivy makes lousy azz wipe. Take the steroid shot, it will stop the itching. Benadryl pills work so does the cream. Don't use petroleum products especially if you smoke. If the oil is gone its a matter of controlling the itching and possible infection. Glad you didn't get it on your back.

Preparation H. It reduces swelling and stops the itch. I'm not kidding.

Roscoe - I'm not kidding about the Old Spice either. Scratch the ivy just a little (after being sure it's been washed good) and apply Old Spice. It'll burn a little, but the alcohol will take the itch away and dries the poison ivy up in short order.

LA I'll give you a shot when I get home. I've stuck you just about every possible place, so its time to open up some new territory. Get yourself ready for it, this might sting a bit.
