Saw a gang last night

Post by Limbshot » August 4th, 2008, 10:40 am

Despite the heat, the klds and I went for a ride through deer country last night, and we saw between 60-70 total, including a bachelor group of 10+. From what I could see, 3 of those deer where real good, spread well out past the ears and very good height. The others we decent 2.5 year olds and there was one deer back in the brush that we couldn't get a look at that body wise was bigger than all the others. We saw tons of does, and a bunch of 1.5 year old bucks, as well as 3 other decent 8 pointers in some tall beans. All in all it was a nice drive. Plan on heading back out there later this week.

Went to the father-in-laws yesterday, and several deer made their nightly appearance in the bean field. More bucks than does. Two good shooters, and one really wide, tall monster. Of course much like last year, I don`t expect them to be around once October gets here.

Trail cameras are going up as soon as I figure out the best places for them. Anyone ever try to put one up, on a stake, in the middle of a bean field? I`m thinking of putting two, back to back. Maybe have them just over the top of the beans, and brush them in a little bit. These deer are always at the far end of the field, just off the end of an old fence row that sticks out into the beans.

Sounds like it would be worth a shot. What is the range on the trail cam?

I have no idea what the range is Dave. I do know that my old, cheap, 35mm cam just got several pics of a tractor that was about 100 yards away. If I put my digital cams in the field they should be no more than 50 yards on either side of the deer.

If I can get this to work, here are a few pics from my two trips out there so far this year. Going to try and head back out tomorrow evening for the first night of this cooler weather

I wouldn't even throw Craig's grunt call at those bucks. But I'd smack the chit outta that owl.

Nice pics Limbshot.

We have a ton of owls in Lone Jack. I wish they ate dogs.

There is nothing stopping me at this point. Do you think I'm going to reign myself in just because there are four people on the net who might notice? DO YOU?!?! Well think again, pal.

Besides, owls would be cooler if they ate dogs. It would do wonders for their reputation as raptors. Think of the forkin' havoc they'd wreak.

Those weren't the good bucks I was talking about jacklegs, just some bucks I saw. I couldn't get pics of the good bucks, maybe this evening.

Craig, do me a favor, if you ever throw your grunt call at a deer from a treestand, make sure it is hanging around your neck when you do it.
