For the First Time.............

Post by Duck Me Runnin » October 7th, 2009, 5:38 pm

in about fifteen years, I'm gonna buy a fall turkey tag. I need to get a good look at the property I'm going to rifle hunt on, and I ain't about to walk around unarmed.

I still have breast meat from a big gobbler in the freezer, so I pity the first 8 # poult that gets within shotgun range. There's a batch of brine and a pecan wood fired smoker in it's future.

Left over smoked turkey tits make the best tetrazzini on the planet. thumb2:

I think I've only fall turkey hunted one or two seasons in my life.

My grandad and his buddies went every season right from the beginning.

Good luck DMR.

I used to go every fall. For some reason, I just got away from it. I guess when I was younger, I was madder at all critters than I am these days.

I can't really say that I've missed it that much, except for the eatin' part.

I went out for the first time in a few years just last Sunday. Another fellow and myself got a little selfish and were trying to kill 4 birds out of a flock of 5. Well, we should have just taken 3 of them and been done with it. But, as luck would have it, we ended up not killing a damn one of them. Three birds within 40 yards and not a shot was fired.

Then, just yesterday, I had 3 big gobblers in the clover at my house. I went back to the house, got my gun, and drove to the end of the clover patch. Got out, walked toward them, and they never moved. I decided they could live another day. They would have been very easy to kill for sure. I could have taken 2 of them in a single shot. I was in a bad mood yesterday and was thinking I needed to kill those birds. But, I'm kind of glad I didn't.

Urban turkeys are the dumbest things around. City park squirrels are more spooky than urban/suburban turkeys.

One spring LA walked up on three strutters in our yard, and the dumb things wouldn't break strut. They were trying to show dominance between the three of them and none of them wanted to be the first to break strut and get out of town, so they all just let her walk up in the mowed lawn to 15yrds or so. She was wanting to take pics, and got some good ones, but I just couldn't believe it.

I never shoot a mature gobbler in the fall if I'm on a property that I may hunt in the spring. Like I said, gimme the 8 pound youngun'.

Back when I lived in rural Franklin co., I used to call a big double bearded gobller into the back yard. I'd watch him strut for a few minutes, then leave for work. I never raised a gun in his direction.

It wasn't turkey hunting, it was just dickin' around.
