Well I took LS junior out for the youth season again this year. Second year he has hunted. You may recall he tagged a 6 pointer on the second day of the season last year. He informed me that he wanted to go sit the same area, which I thought was a good idea, as the area had a major acorn mast this year. We went out there and got in the stand yesterday morning and got set up. We immediately had a deer running at us and then it just seemed to disappear. Never saw it, had only heard it. At about 8:00, he fell asleep in the stand, which was cool, because he keeps still that way!
I was looking to my right when I heard foot steps directly behind us, slowly turn and look, and there is a spike at 20 yards an closing. I woke him up and told him to hold still, the buck was set to walk right under us. I asked him if he wanted to shoot, and he said yes. The deer looked up at us and froze, and I thought it was over. He never spooked, but simply changed directions. He turned and went across behind us. I grabbed the gun and brought it around to my left and told him to stand up and get in position as the buck walked behind some thick brush. He got ready and I grunted the buck to a stop. He couldn't find him in the scope, he finally found him as the buck started walking again. I grunted again, and he got the scope on him. He said "I'm right behind the shoulder," so I told him to ease back on the trigger, and BOOM! The deer jumped up and took off running for about 60 yards before he piled up. We high fived and hugged and we both started shaking with excitement. Had to wait about 20 minutes for us both to calm down. I realize this is by no means a giant, but the hunts that he and I have shared together have been the most memorable hunts I have been on . Totally awesome to see him perform at crunch time!!! Shot looks a little back, but he was quartering away quite a bit, and the bullet actually exited the off shoulder. Perfect shot!!! Still pumped!!!
