Launched out of Bolivar Landing about 7:30 and headed up the river. Started on the right hand bank roughly halfway between the Landing and the 1st bend. Water temp is now in the upper mid-70's and there is quite a bit of trash up to foot thick tree trunks floating in the channel. If you go there be careful. No hits on spinner bait, but did get some
pickups with a plastic worm. As the wind picked up, it got harder to keep going into it, so I cranked up and went across to the end of the bluff where it flattens out. I fished all the way back to the point at the Landing without a strike. By then it was getting late in the morning so I cranked up and ran down to the 83 Marina for a Snickers bar.
On the way back I decided to try the first cove on the right which has a lot of standing timber in it. It's well known as a good crappie hole, but also has the occasional bass. I took the right side of the "Y" to get out of the steadily increasing wind and started working the south bank.
For the first hundred yards, nothing. Then I remembered that Berkley had sent me a sample pack of Gulp baits, so I pulled them out and put on this ugly looking purplish thing that looked like a cross between and 4" baby snake and a minnow. For the next 45 minutes, I could not count the number of strikes I had on that ugly thing. I boated eight bass, the largest went about 2 lbs +, and had three rock bass (down south we called them goggle eye) jump on it. These were not light taps....all the fish hit it fast and hard. When the purple minnow thing was totally destroyed and I couldn't find a way to keep it on the hook any more, I got out the sample earthworm from the package. It was a loud pink-tan color....even uglier than than the minnow. The strikes kept coming..Now I don't know what is in that Gulp bait, but their advertising claims it outfishes live bait. Based on what happened to me yesterday, I can believe it. A simple change in plastics made the day go from a total bust into a pretty successful outing. Now I gotta do something about this little sunburn,...........

....I may go get it and put it in some water to see if it will re-hydrate....whatever makes it work sure has my attention. We will get back up there later in the week and give it some more "scientific" comparison testing.
