Game Cams

Post by Warmouth » January 7th, 2013, 9:39 am

Is anyonne still running their cams?

I've been getting midday activity on mine10am-2pm, which is a little odd, but I do have it tucked in a bedding area.

I haven't had a pic of a decent buck all year. :|

I just put one out on the new place a week ago and took a look Friday and had alot of pictures during that time frame also. Mostly does but did get one small buck. I noticed the time on the last picture and it was at 10:13, the same time I was heading towards the camera.

when my camera was out I had a lot of pics in that timeframe too. Even the big bucks. Pulled the camera right before season because it was in an area we use to get to stands. I am going to put it out again this weekend.

I run cams year round. No, I'm not getting a lot of pics in that timeframe. The deer are on their winter feed pattern now. Afternoon and night make up most of the pics. I no longer buy into the mid-day hype. Even in the rut, mid-day isn't that great, and cams don't lie. Sure, it happens, but shooting an occasional deer during that frame does not make a pattern.

Side note - Dave were those pics from the recent wind and cold? In a bed like that, in those conditions, that's about right for them to get up and feed and adjust. Not long range travel, but a little adjustment and nutrition.

I agree that stand hunting mid-day is a waste of time. Very low odds, which is why I was surprised when 25% of my pics were between 10a-2p., just weird. Dec 24-Jan 6. The other 25% were more typical dawn or dusk time frame pics and the final 50% at night.

It is a south facing little brushy spot, with topography breaking up any north wind. Pretty sweet little bedding spot for deer if they can find it.

I think it varies depending on location, as my wetland property in NW MO consistently has buck movement year to year from 1 pm to 3 pm. I used to dismiss midday to early afternoon especially at other properties I own and hunt but not that one.

This feeder is w/i sight of the house. Got this guy on cam a bunch this year but never, never during daylight hours. No this is not a "city" deer. I'll keep this cam up until March. Last year had antlered deer on it till I took it down

I for one will not discount midday rut activity on the HFA albeit the best movement I see is generally from about 8am to 11am. A couple of days this year they were moving from daylight to dark at every hour in between.

I've still got a single camera out. Does and fawns have been moving at all hours for some reason. I've got very few bucks on camera. They must be on a better food source. I don't have any cameras on my corn feeder though. If there are any bucks at all coming to it, it is at night.
