Come Shoot.....
Come Shoot.....
at Wellsville Wildlife area.
I have 100 rnds I need to shoot through my 300 WSM Varmint rifle. If anyone wants to pull the trigger (Savage Accutrigger) a few times come on down.
I should be there within the hour and will be there for several hours since I need to let the barrel cool for a couple of minutes between shots.

Re: Come Shoot.....
SF - What kind of range they have there??? Sorry I couln't make it but I am just now reading this.(now if we just had a  smilie)

Re: Come Shoot.....
Fish,
I went there because I heard they had redone the range. Concrete benches and gravel trails to the targets.
Well, all that is true but........
The gravel stops at the 30 ft mud puddle in front of the 100 yd range.
The targets are set up at 12:00 (100 yd), 1:00 (50 yd) and 2:00(not shure 30 yds or so). But the benches are all parallel to the 100 yd range. So the two benches for the shorter targets are not lined up with the targets.
The front of the bench needs to be about a foot longer and the rear of the bench needs to be 6-8" longer.
If they had someone that knew what they were doing in charge and spent maybe $200.00 more it would be a good range.
Kingfisher and Duck Me Runnung were at the lake and came over for a while. KF's boy shot his first duck and turkey loads. My boy shot the 300 WSM for the first time.
Between KF, DMR, Mouse, Darrel, Steve, the two boys and myself we had a good afternoon.

Re: Come Shoot.....
Sure sounds like it...
Since you've got one, what are the wsm loads like? I know you've got the .300 but I would still like to know what there like. Thank you.

Fish,
KF and crew caugh one bas one crappie and one perch.
I think that if the fish were biting they would have stayed on the lake.
DRN,
The more I shoot this thing the more I like it.
The load we were shooting was a "pulled out of my ass" safety load for blowing the brass out to my chamber. I will start serious load development in the next week or so. In spite of this we were getting lots of cloverleafs and vertical stringing but touching groups.(100 yds) There is a serious wind comming over the side berms at this range.

Hey Swamp Fox,
Have you ever seen this guy's website before?
http://home.earthlink.net/~dannewberry/dannewberrysoptimalchargeweightloaddevelopment/
If not, give it a read. This guy has an interesting technique for developing PET loads. His theory is a good load is based more on finding the optimal charge weight for a given powder/bullet combo vs. anything else. He is making a strong statement with his results. He is shooting 5 round groups at sub minute/angle from 300 yds. with rounds loaded with different brass & primer components, only the powder charge and bullet are consistent. Initially, I was reluctant. I had been working up loads for my 06, I had some good ones. I was reluctant but curiosity got the best of me. I followed his instructions and sure enough, his recommended load for the 165gr. 06 is awesome.

I've got that site on my favorites list. If I have time I will do side by side OCW and ladder test to see which one hits the first home run.

Fish.. Most the time when I type a true post I am good at spelling but when I go ta jok'n arend and huven foon I tipe like that.

Swamp_fox. Thank you for the thoughts there. I was thinking about getting the .243 or .223(or I think the .223 is the other round in the wsm loads). Sounds like it is a great accurate rifle and I think anyone would be proud to own one even if they say they don't like the "fat" round.
