If you live close to one of the trout parks (i.e. Bennett Spring, Montauk, etc.) check with the consessionaire. I believe the same guy runs all of them....at the end of the canoe season they sell off some of their older canoes and replace them with new ones. Couple of years ago the price was $125 for your pick of the available boats. The ones at Bennett Spring were 17 foot aluminum jobs made in Lebanon.
I believe the brand name is Osagian.
If you are handy with a hammer and body tools, the dents and dings can be flattened in a short time. If not, they give a canoe character anyway. They also had some plastic Coleman canoes, but they appeared to be "extremely well used" compared to the aluminum canoes. Good luck on finding something. You might also check with the canoe rental companies. They usually have a number of canoes that they take out of service each year. There's a bunch of them up and down the Niangua River around Lebanon. The larger outfitters have hundreds of canoes on hand, and when a canoe has "X" amount of time on the river, it comes off the water. Must be an insurance liability thing.
