Where's the pork?
Where's the pork?
Where in MO can you hunt feral hogs, and have a good chance of seeing some to shoot at? I've heard Fort Leonard Wood has a sizable population of them. Any info on hunting them would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Where's the pork?
There is a huntable herd of feral hogs on the reservation at Ft. Leonard Wood. Since it is a military post, you have to register and pay a small fee. I believe that you are limited to using a shotgun, but the Rec Services people at the Fort can clarify that. There are a couple of other areas, particularly down on the Arkansas-Missouri line in the southwest corner of the state that reportedly have numbers of hogs. The National Forest area(s) down in Stone and Taney counties have hogs, but you gotta go way back in the woods to get them. Rumor has hit that the hog hunters are bringing in Russian boar stock from Oklahoma and releasing them in the woods....the result is going to be some good boar hunting at the expense of the rest of the ecosystem...the hogs will reduce deer and turkey numbers and cause millions of dollars in damage to crops and erosion resulting from their rooting. You can hunt feral hogs year round, by any method, and kill any number with no limit. MDC strongly encourages you to shoot every one that you can. When it gets a little cooler, BB and I will be doing some scouting for ferals in another area. If that works out, it might get reported. Good luck with yours.

I just had some for lunch that was leftovers from Thursday night. Grilled it on the deck w/some McCormick Roasted Garlic Montreal Chicken seasoning. Good stuff.

Hey CW thanks for the reply. You wouldn't by chance have any contact numbers or e-mail addy's for the Fort? Thanks again.

I don't have one, but I imagine the Fort has a website and the rec office would be listed on it. If that doesn't work, you can call the base switchboard on their civilian number (you can find that on the internet) and ask to be transferred to the post recreation officer. I'm ex-Air Force, but posts and air bases work pretty much the same way. I think MDC also has some information on hunting on post property....lots has changed and tightened up since
9/11. I do know you have to be a registered hunter and pay a daily fee (maybe five bucks) to hunt on military property. If you hunt in the Mark Twain National Forest outside post boundaries, it's free. There's several guys who post over on the MissouriWhitetails.com site who live in that area and hunt hogs. They can probably give you more current information. You might also send a PM to GoGOP...he knows a ton of people over that way, and can probably give you some helpful advice. Better hurry...he's going in the hospital for surgery any day now.

Mule....that seems to be a problem almost everywhere. They have learned that daylight is not good for their well being.
When it cools down a few degrees, we are going to try to appeal to their sense of greed and the maternal instinct to protect a piglet in distress using a battery powered game call. If a herd is within hearing range, they should react to the call and come a-running. The good part is that you can hear them coming and be ready.
