Sounds like you had some problems with the ultimate steel heads. Just wondering, What were they? Image

I assume my statement in the bowhunting forum initiated this. I wouldn't say he actually had problems with them, just no solid evidence of their effectiveness. I will say, from what I saw, they flew very well for him.

I must assume my reply also had something to do with this. MoBuck's problem was not the head. He just misjudged the yardage.

Ken..I lost a few animals this year. You may have read about the two pigs on our hunt. I made some bad shots this year...one on the 1st pig and on a couple deer. I can't honestly say that I have made a clean shot in the vitals on any of the animals I didn't recover. Therefore I'm not ready to blame the broadhead. I shot two deer that that were no doubt good shots and both dropped within 40 yds. The second pig I shot was no doubt a kill shot and I am convinced the pig died. The son of the guide at the ranch we were hunting talked me into trying to recover that hog way too early and we pushed him and never found him again. I learned a big lesson on this trip. (Don't assume that just because a fella is a guide he automatically knows what he is talking about.) My gut told me to leave the hog go until morning and he talked me out of it. Anyhow, as far as the broadheads go, they shoot great for me as long as I make good shots. The only thing I am concerned with with the Ultmate Steel 100's is the smaller cutting diameter. I can't help but wonder if a couple of the animals that got away from would not have if I had a little more trauma to the wounds. Who really knows? All I can say is this has been the most frustrating period in my life in regards to hunting. I hadn't last an animal in 7 years until this year.

Get it figured out before spring turkey. Have you thought about a sports psychologist?

Sorry To hear it. I thought it might of had something to do with the blade retention problem I had heard about. As far as recovery goes it has not been a problem for me or others that I know that are using them, To be honest most are amazed at how fast such a small head can put an animal down.
I have used the head with success but also was slightly concerned about the small cutting diameter,This last season I dropped to the 75 grn. head because of the full 1 inch cutting surface,Never had a chance to use it on anything but a yote,Lotta blood,Down fast.

I hadn't heard about any blade retention issues, can you elaborate?

MOBuck?.I didn't realize you were shooting the Rocket Ultimate Steel Heads, I guess I should've read the post closer.

I don't want to ?beat a drum? but you guys really should go over to www.huntingbbs.com and search for broad test results posted by a guy named ?5 Shot?. I realize there may be no such thing as a controlled or ?real world? broadhead test but this guy does provide a level playing field and delivers a consistent ?broadhead-to-broadhead? comparison. He?s been testing broadheads long enough that the major manufactures recognize his name and readily donate test samples.

With that said?..the Rocket Ultimate Steel failed miserably in his test. They came apart in almost every medium he shot into. If I recall correctly, the failures were not even border line, in most case all three blades were shed when it came apart.

Just food for thought, hope it helps

Well it seem's that when Rocket first came out with the heads that there was an issue about the blades having some slop to them, To the point of completely coming out of the ferule upon impact with an animal. Rocket Admitted that a bad batch had got past qc and said the problem had been fixed. The heads they have sold since the fix are black, The one's from which the bad batch came from are unpainted. Now with that being said I owned some of the unpainted one's ,No problem with them at all,Same from other's that I know who use them.My 75's are the black one's, One head has been through a piece of 1/2 plywood 6 or 7 times and is still all together. Seem's like very few of the bad one's made it to the public ,But the one's that did has gave the head a bad name. Only real test that I have heard of was shooting them trough a 55 gallon drum. They said the head went trough one side intact and lost blades as it hit the other side.

Bowhunter,

Sounds like you are referring to same test I am talking about. He shoots through plywood, steel drums, tires, along with some other materials.

I was aware Rocket admitted some early problems, but I was not aware of a simple QA overlook. I was told they actually had to redesign certain aspects of the head after a massive rebuttal from the public. With that said, I have not been back to see if 5 Shot retested the head after the redesign.

Toby, While saying that it was a quaility control issue,They did make some modifacations also. When using the heads as with any other replacable blade head,Alway's make sure the heads are screwed tight to the arrow. That is after all what keep's the blades in place. Image

MoCraig,
Thanks but the filter here at school will not allow me to access the American-hunter website for some reason. Is there anyway you could save it on a file and email it to me?
