Finally for Aim Low...

Post by Robin@AimLow » November 22nd, 2004, 10:56 pm

My 11 yr old daughter Kristen got her deer yesterday morning. It was a 9 pt that she dropped with a 45 yard shot. She had missed a doe Sat morning and was bummed all day about it (I think she hit a limb right in front of her rest, the video clearly shows the leaves exploding over her back). Soon after settling in Sun morning, 5 does crossed the river and popped over the bank less than 50 yards from us. We saw them crossing and she had the gun on the rest ready, but couldn't find one that would stand still long enough for a shot. It was too brushy for me to know when to stop one for her and they walked on by us. By now, I thought she had her last chance. I had a hard time keeping quiet about her missing a good chance. I had her practice finding about 5 or 6 stumps and stuff with the scope. Right as she handed me the gun back, her buck popped over the bank in the same spot and I stopped him with a grunt in the only opening I thought she could shoot. She found him quick and told me there was brush, but I told her to find a hole and shoot before he walked away. Down he went at the shot and didn't flinch. Wow, her third deer in her first three years of hunting. Those have been the best three hunts of my life.

Seems like her deer keep getting bigger each year.

You got that right 2B.

That is her biggest buck, though just be coincidence. We talked last night about that being her last small buck, and she is fine with that.

Congrats on a great deer.

My 6 year old son shot his first deer (a big doe) Saturday night, so now I have to get him on a buck next year.

That's quite a rifle she has there. What is she shooting ? I'd let her kill anything she want's till she decides on her own to move up. That's a great deer for a youngster. That scenario is the only problem I have with the point restriction. Kids and newcomers ought to be able to get there feet wet without having to count points. Just make em happy so they continue to support what we all love the mostus. Image

2B: Kids can still kill anything they want. That is for sure the case for a youth tag. I assume it is the same for a youth on a regular firearms tag. PoisonSnake

Is that right ? Did not know that. Well good for the MDC. So I understand this right... Youth under 15 can kill what they want during both youth season and regular rifle in counties that have point restrictions. Or is it just during the youth season ?

Well, it looks like they can for the 2 day youth hunt, but maybe not the regular season.

I don't know, cause it didn't apply to our area. We are w/in a mile of the pt restrictions though. She is shooting a Sako 25-06. Her Grandpa got it for her last year. Yes, quite a sweet gun and she handles the recoil with no probs.

I won't make her pass bucks, but will suggest it. She sees me bring home lots of does so she has nothing against a doe. Chances are, she will intend to pass up small ones until a couple of days goes by with no opp's, or it is really cold...
