Re: IBO vs. AMO
I guess both. I haven't a clue.
While we are at it how about a definition of terms. I have my own understanding which many times is quite different than others.
Example:
Solid wall back
Brace height and its effects ( Forgivenss )
rollover
draw cycle
rollover
valley

A valley is usually between two hills.
A solid back wall is usually made out of bricks.
Rollover is what mamma do.
Brace Height determines how much your teeth are going to be moved
Draw cycle is an old bicycle with a half barrel on the back.
What else do you need to know?

Re: IBO vs. AMO
My old Martin I shoot has a brace height of about 1/4 inch. So how tricky is that? I know its less that 7, like 6 3/4 inches

Re: IBO vs. AMO
I can say that my PSE Nitro had a brace height of about 6.5". I had to change my entire grip and it took some getting used to. But, the bow was amazingly fast and very tunable. It had a solid back wall and a much better valley than the Mathews Outback I am shooting now. A to A was about 34". That is why I think the Switchback from Mathews is going to be a much nicer bow than my current setup. Regardless, they all kill deer.

Re: IBO vs. AMO
Mocraig (Man this hurts) is correct, a larger brace height clearly makes for a more forgiving bow. I personally like a longer bow with a decent brace height, but they tend to be a bit slower. I know Mocraig will agree with me here, a longer ATA bow is much more stable to hold, and will produce better long range accuracy for most people. You will, however, likely lose a little speed. My next bow will probably be between 37-40 inches ATA with a 7-7 1/2 inch brace, with a bit of a valley and some type of draw check mechanism to produce a solid back wall. It may not be the fastest bow on the range, but I guarantee you I will have tight groupings out to 50 yards. My current set up is 37 inches ATA with a 6 1/4 brace, it shoots good, and is plenty fast, I just want something just a touch more forgiving. I know short ATA bows can be good for tree stand shooting, but shoot a short and then a long bow back to back and pay attention to stability!!!

Re: IBO vs. AMO
If per say I have no plans of shooting out past 30, maybe 40 yards. Is there enough difference out that far to consider a longer bow ? I really liked the 32 a2a on my old mq32.

If I`m not mistaken the AMO is now referred to as the ATA (Archery Trade Association).
MOCraig,
You cut and pasting all this 411, or do you really know your chit that well? If you`re getting this off the top of your head, then I`m impressed.
(Not that that counts for anything)

Re: IBO vs. AMO
ahh bullchit. My mq32 shot pretty level out to 40 yards. I shoot with one pin so I raised maybe 6 inches at 40 yards which was sighted in at 20.

Re: IBO vs. AMO
My point is it seems the difference comes into play more in target shooting vs. Killin chit.

Re: IBO vs. AMO
2B: I don't think it will make much difference at all. I had a 34" Nitro and a 37" Team Primos and at 40 yards they were pretty much the same. I had to put it on the deers backbone to drive it home at 40, and I shot one pin set deadon at 30 yards. Right now, my bow is 31.5" A to A, and it is about the same.

Re: IBO vs. AMO
Absolutely it will make a big difference at longer distances. Inside 30, probably not so much though, really deoends on the shooter and form.
Mocraig, haven't beeon doing a huge amount of searching yet, but two bows I am looking into are the Darton Tundra, 40 inches ATA 7 1/2 inch brace AMO 237.5 IBO 311. Not to shabby for a bow of those dimensions. It does, however have the CPS Extreme system. The bow is very shock free and extrememly quiet, which is a new thing for Darton. I am also looking into the Martin Shadowcat Target which is 40 1/4 inches ATA with an 8 1/2 inch brace still shooting up to 305 IBO, not blazing fast, but it is a two cam bow, with two options for grip angles and they have developed a riser that incorporates shock absorbing material inside the riser. I think that bow will be a shooting MOFO!!! I'll really be looking after January. You looking to buy Mocraig? Be interested in sharing notes with you as I go if you are. I have shot the new Bowtech Defender, and the draw cycle on that thing is really wierd. It starts off harsh and tehn lightens up a little before roll over, would take a lot of getting used to. Shooting bare bow at 28 inch draw, 60 pounds with a 300 grain arrow, we were getting 290 FPS, but I can't remember the dimensions of the bow right now. IT will not be my next bow though, just felt too strange!
